Better way to find out your mileage.

Ok, so this won't give a more accurate MPG rating BUT it's a more usefull measurement of how much your vehicle costs you to maintain.... MILES PER DOLLAR!! That's right.. I was thinking about it today at the pump... I went 216miles on $20 worth of gas meaning my car averages 10.8mpD. so every 11miles costs me a dollar. I put $15 in gas in so I'll see how much this tank will cost me.

ok, updated..

last tank of $15 worked out to be 12.x miles/$

This is only because gas now has gone down to $2.00/gallon. When it drops down it should get closer to 13miles/$

$1.95 here - i'll have to see how many mpD i can get...

i usually get 25-30 mpg...

so. should be 12.8 - 15.4 depending on my right foot.

the critical number here is miles per dollar so post those up....not your local gas prices.

Ive not thought about that, Im still a little confused.
Ive tried to use the old fashoin way and running to 1/4 tank and estimating from their, but I always end up putting more gas in it out of habit....
Ill have to try that one day..

p.s. its gone done like 5 times in one week...its now $1.92

what confuses you? Just run the car down to the empty line, put in $10 (to make it easy), drive until it's back to the empty line. Write down that mileage, divide it by 10. That tells you how many miles you went on $1.

Yeah, but I heard if you run a car to low on gas, when you put fresh, the cold gas can make the fuel pump go out..

you heard incorrectly.

I didn't say run it too low. I just said run it to the E line...or until the light comes on. Thats a good indicator.

$10 of gas gets you 150 miles (hypotheticaly) you get 15 miles per dollar. Real easy calculation.

then for giggles.....take that number....say 15 miles per dollar and divide it into your vehicles mileage.

I have 25K miles right now so... it cost me $1,667 in gas (assuming gas prices never fluctuate).

you need to run the car as close to empty as possible. Then put in a specific dollar amount...doesn't matter how much. I just used nice round numbers. Then when you run out of gas divide your miles by the dollars you put in the tank....get your number. I'ts real easy....
