I'm sure this question gets asked a thousand times, but the FAQ seems to be down and searching didn't reveal any definitive answers.

I have a friend who just bought a new '03 P5 with the sport shift auto and wants more power. I see that there are several shops offering turbo kits for the new Protege's. My question is will they work with the auto cars, and will the auto tranny handle the extra power?

I'm really only familiar with the RX-7 world, 3rd gen 7's with the auto don't fair too well once you start modding them.

Are these kits (like the Flying Protege one) truly complete, or will an ECU mod be required? What about extra fuel? Over in the 7 world we worry a lot about detonation and always go overkill on the fuel compensation for adding more boost.

Does anyone have good/bad feedback on the different kits out there?

Any info would be appreciated. TIA.

Just make sure to get a tranny cooler and check the fluid regularily. I have the www.essentialspeed.com kit and have put over 35000 on it so far with no problems.

hi, i've been considering going turbo for a while now. been reading up on it and talking and listening to you guys. one thing i read the other day was to avoid sending to much fuel. this can been real bad for you you too, meaning that an fmu is not good enough? comments and suggestions always welcomed!

FMU is fine for lowboost applications. Something around 7 or less I would say. Maybe more. When you begin to go higher you can often max out your injectors, and have less control over the fuel. A piggy back will be good, as a simple fuel computer or you can go all out after that and get a stand alone engine management system. Look at spending anywhere from 1-3000 for a stand alone, plus tunning, 5-900 for a piggy back + tunning and about 200+ for an FMU. Tunning should run anywhere from 50-100/hr unless you can do that yourself

thanks! so if i'm running a low boost system, like a say spool stage 1, the fmu application will work ok? i'm not looking for a race car, i just want a few more ponies when i need them, but don't want to spend a ton of money(over 3500), and don't want a car that's running to rich to lean, stalling etc.. this is my daily driver, so it's got to be dependable.

Seriously if you can't afford down time on occasion and extra $$ to fix things IF they ever go wrong this probably isn't the route you wanna take. An FMU is fine for what you are saying but if you and allows you to upgrade later. You just need to remember that the boost bug might bite and you'll be upping the boost and blowing things up. Just research and do things smart and you should have no problems

thanks, downtime is not a big issue, i mean i have down time now for just the regular maint. issues....and i realize that a turbo is going to require some different attention...longer start up's and shut down's....i think i'll be able to control my "need for speed"

beware the weak trannys. I had 1 auto turbo car and the torque convetor just kept slinging ittself apart. I've also heard of more than a couple of the auto P5's doing the same. I'd look into upgrading the torque converter at the same time. It only seems wise to me. Congrats to MarkMurray77 to last this long with the auto!! I know some people who are jealous!!
