forced induction question

Is turbo also forced induction?

And what does it actually mean?

simply it means you are pushing air into the engine rather than it sucking air in

yes a turbo is forced induction, and in laymans terms forced induction means cramming air down the throat of the motor or FORCE-ing it to INDUCT air

oh ok.

so nos, turbocharged, superchraged are all FI?
and are there other FI's?

Theres a lot to learn abour FI but once you get the basics it all falls into place

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm Good place to start.

Ok, this may sound stupid, but how does NOs qualify as FI? I thought FI was used in terms of air induction only.

nitrous oxide contains 4 times the oxygen of regular atmosphere. Basically, a REAL simple explantion would be that 1 part nitrous contains 4 parts oxygen. So you cram 4 parts nitrous into the engine and you're getting 16x's the air. That's why it's instant power thats how they can say specific jet sizes will yield specific HP results because it's all math based on atmosphere.

Yeah I've had people try to tell me that nitrous isn't FI because it's not forcing air into the engine. Technically they are right, because it's not, technically, forcing air in. It's using the same amount of air with a little bit of extra gas that contains a lot more oxygen than the normal 30% in the atmosphere.

Now that I figured that out, why don't they just use oxygen injection? Why even have the nitrogen in the mix?

pure oxygen would be a recipe for disaster..it would make the car go boom....Even with N20 You need a good metering system and that can still go boom if not properly handled.

Close
NO2 is actually a 3 atomed molecule this means that first the N and O2 split off then the O2's split off and burn this means that the amount of presssure the NO2 is making tripples. And after the O2 burns off the N can expand and actually produce power.

Pure O2 would just oxidize the **** out of whatever its burning, and whatever its not. Effectivly destroying everything while not leaving much air to expand in the compbustion chamber. Somethimes even making O3 which would reduce power, becuase where there was once 3 molecules there is now 1 under large amounts of heat.

Atmospheric O2 is closer to 16% BTW.

das my useless fact for the dat...
