First dyno tests of the FM Protegé

We (finally) got our P5 on the dyno today with the turbo. It's currently running at 6 psi for tuning. We're going to need a stronger fuel pump before we turn up the boost.

Bottom line: 55% more power, 60% more torque at the wheels. A good start.

Nice torque! That's damn near 200 ft lbs at the flywheel I'd imagine. It's too bad the P5 engine doesn't seem to like high revs, otherwise the horsepower numbers would be better. You guys thought about playing with cams/cam gears on the thing yet?

Keep up the good work guys

I'd have to agree. ~150 HP and 175 ft lbs at the wheels is probably around 175 HP and 200 ft lbs at the flywheel at least (given that the 130 HP stock P5 dynoes around 95-100 at the wheels).

I would imagine with a torque curve like that, traction and torque steer are going to be the limiting factors in straight line speed.

Keep in mind that our numbers are measured at the wheels. The Mazdaspeed Protegé is quoted at the crank. We don't quote crank numbers because we can't measure them, but we saw a 34hp loss through the transmission on the baseline run.

I suspect we'll be looking at suspension parts before we do much work with cams. We're not looking to make 250hp out of these things like with the Miatas - after all, the wrong wheels are driving!

Our first exhaust system is on the way to us.

how well will the stock transmission and clutch with this kind of power being delivered into them?... something like this kit would be awfully tempting once the car is out of warranty... and at the rate I am going that is going to be next year... but I still need to be able to depend on it as a daily driver.

Yep, that's what I ment. In my roundabout way I was pointing out that you're probably making more than the MS Protege...

Looking forward to seeing what kinda other goodies you guys are planning for the car.

How will the stock tranny deal with the power? Well, that's why we have a test car!

It drives quite nicely. Torque steer is not a problem - "I could autocross this thing with one finger" is a quote after coming off the course - and the car basically feels like it came from the factory this way.

I suspect that the MP3s should keep the boost down to 5 until we know if the advanced timing will cuase a problem. But chance say I am going to push it. Hopefully you'll knowexactly the needs of the fuel pump asap so I can get it installed when I do the kit.

The torque is the scary part as that's what kills the tranny. Maybe my alignment is off but I notice torque steer in my car & it's bone stock.

Nice numbers is that with a stock exhaust or aftermarket?

Kieth,

It drives quite nicely. Torque steer is not a problem - "I could autocross this thing with one finger" is a quote after coming off the course - and the car basically feels like it came from the factory this way.
This conflicts with the review of the MS3 that has even less power and an lsd. Can you explain this? I would really like to purchace this turbbo, but I hesitated after reading that review.

Thanks,

The new MPS may be worst off for torque steer due to the more aggressive rubber & different suspension tuning, ie. more aggressive toe setting in the front.
