Here are the details:

Here is a video of a similar occurance...:

PRO 5's Engine go Boom clip

I heard the same sound from the engine...I was only going about 43-40 MPH though..

Patio March-7th-2003 07:50 PM

aww crap!! that sucks man :(

turboge March-10th-2003 07:23 PM

How does the Rod get through the crank to go through the oil pan? That's some rough stuff. That video is terrible, the sound of blowing a motor like that is agonizing.

Bruce95fmla March-10th-2003 08:05 PM

damn the crinches in my neck ,,, that did not sound right , and for it to go at almost 120 mph .............

LinuxRacr March-11th-2003 09:22 AM

Yeah, my car made that sound at 40 MPH...:(
By the way, I have ordered my Pauter Rods. Good for 30 PSI (of course I am not crazy enough to even strive for that in my Protege! )

eeterp March-11th-2003 05:14 PM

man i'm terribly sorry to hear your bad luck. nice to see that you aren't giving up.

are you getting a new short block? if you're upgrading the rods maybe you could look into forged pistons as well?

markmurray77 March-11th-2003 06:43 PM

Do you think this had to do with your engine swap or some previous knock problem. Why not rebuild the engine almost bullet proof instead of just the rods, therefore you won't have a problem later.

LinuxRacr March-13th-2003 04:33 AM

I already ordered my new FORGED rods from Flyin Protege. Here they are: http://www.Pauter.com . They had 4 sets in stock! I probably won't consider pistons due to the fact that I don't plan on upping the boost that much. I just want some reliability in a moderately fast daily driver. Besides, I probably cannot afford the pistons also right now. With the expansion properties of forged pistons, I would rather stay with the stock pistons.

simple solution

grind your crank to honda specs
use high strenghth honda rods and pistons
deck hieght is almost the same
i am not a honda fan
but mazda custom rods are expensive and not reliable yet

from 2002 pro5 monster with 440hp

Forged Rods and Pistons!

I now have my Pauter Rods, and have ordered my JE forged pistons. I will be back with a vengence! http://www.protegemp3.com/vbb225/ima...lies/laugh.gif

Here are the details of the Rods:

awesome. that sounds like a nice bottom end. are you getting a metal headgasket? are you staying with the stock redline? what are you doing about the fuel system?

I will keep it all the same right now, and I will test and tune with the J&S Safeguard unit. I should have turned up the boost retard, but I think it still would have been too late due to the fact that the subtle detonation was there for a while before I got the J&S.
