Using a '99 pocket w/door in a 2003?

I will be installing a single DIN Kenwood head unit in my daughter's 2003 Mazda Protege. She wanted the pocket with a door, so I acquired one out of a '99 Mazda Protege from Mazmart. I had expected to get an assembly that was double DIN in size, with the hole for the radio on top and the pocket/door on the bottom. Instead, I got only the single DIN pocket with the door. Am I missing a piece? It seems as though when I pull out the Protege OEM double DIN radio, I'll have a double-DIN size hole. Will the pocket/door that I have just slide in on the bottom with the Kenwood on top? Anybody been through this?

HAS anyone replaced a double-DIN radio with a single-DIN radio and a "pocket with door"?

HELP!!!

there may be a metal piece that fills the slot between the two units, but you might be fine without it, good luck.

Metra sells a dash kit for the Proteges that uses the same concept except without the "door." It just comes with a pocket and no trim to go around the radio itself. I found it hard because the radio would almost "fall" in the hole since there was no way of securing it. I ended up getting a Scoshe kit which did have the trim. Coming from a previous Protege (even if it is older), I wouldn't think you would encounter any problems. I emailed Crutchfield about the Metra kit (the first I told you about), and they suggested to slip a thin piece of wood between the radio and the kit, but it didn't work too well. I guess you will have to try it and see. Good luck. Wish I could tell you some thing better.

I have used foam weatherstrip materal between the two in the past, and it has worked well. Decent looks and can used to pad the deck from the pocket.
