too much power??

i was hooking up my string neons and i bought a toggle switch and hooked it directly to the battery which was a stupid idea cuz when i turn it on wires started smokin. my question is what to i need to lower the volts going to my lights cuz i dont wanna have it hooked up to my outlet.

would you need to get a fuse? i dont know im not that good on electronics.

did it come with any type of transformer or anything else. Or did it say to hook up to power? The Streetglow HotWirez comes with a Power Inverter
