Tint Legalities?

Ok, I know in my province (Alberta) you're not supposed to have tint on the front windows. That means NOTHING. Anything past your shoulders is ok, but the front windows are not to be done. I decided to go with 35% all around my car, (see avatar to your left,) and although the cops look at me, (they see kid, new car, loud exhaust...) I've never been stopped. If I do get stopped due to the tint, can they legally make me take it off right there?

A buddy of mine had to take his limo tint off his side windows in front of the cop. He said he didn't have anything to take it off with, but the cop just handed him a knife, and told him to get cracking. He took his sweet *** time. It took like 45 mins just to do one window on a mustang! And all the while the cop stood there and watched, and as it turned out they actually had a conversation!

Back on track, can a cop make me take it off right there? I'm aware my tint is illegal, so I'm more than willing to pay the ticket should I get busted, but taking it off? Isn't that damage to property or something?

Any insight is appreciated.

my guess is:

if you have an attitude about it, he'll make you take it off right there. if you just suck it up, chances are you'll get a fix-it ticket.

friend of mine has 20% on a new tiburon and he's already been dinged for i think it was around $40 on the ticket, but he didn't have to remove it then and there.

i've had no issues with mine so far.

No they don't have the legal justification to make you take your tint off in the US not sure about Canada, I would however tell the officer to give you a fix it ticket as you where unaware of the tint policy. If the cop tells you to take it off tell him to call his supervisor, and explain to you where in the law gives him the authority to make you take off the tint. It's only illegal to drive around with the tint on your front windows. If you happened to notice the Cop before he pulls you over just roll down the drivers window and passenger side window and tell him its a show car and does not get driven that often.

Like I said in another thread Roll your windows down before the Cop gets to your windows. Here in AZ they must have a reason to pull you over not just for tint it has to be a traffic violation.

I would agree with all said, and if you roll down your windows you are no longer illegal, offer to roll the windows down as opposed to taking it off there. Your best bet though is to abide by the law in the first place. good luck

I was in my body shop today talking with the Tint Guy, and he has heard stories about Winnipeg cops scratching up illegal tint jobs with their keys. The theory is that no one wants their car to look like ****, and they will get the tint removed right away. Not sure if I buy it, but you never know. I've never been hassled about *anything* before, so I don't really know how shitty and mean cops can be.

I got pulled over in the spring for the tint on my old Cutlass (I had 20% all around) and copper let me off with a warning and said I had 24 hours to take it off the front windows.

That was in Ontario when I lived there and after checking it out I found out that you're allowed to go 35% on the front.

I would allow the cop to scratch my tint as long as I had a witness then I would sue the F**K outta the police department for vandalism and improper use of authority. Then kick the cop in the freaking head and put him in citzens arrest! lol

i had a full limo tint job on my car for 5 days before i got a ticket. Cop told me he thought it looked nice, and wouldn't make me take it off. HA 34 dollar ticket, the nice tint job is worth the fine.
I figure, just be nice to the cop, and they will be nice back.

heh... I dunno... if you guys are worried about tint regulations just move to CA... for all I know.. they're pretty linient on they laws. Most people get away with tinting their windshield since when you tint the windows pretty dark you can see through the windshield anyway. haha.
