Subwoofer Placement in Sedan

I just installed my system and the bass sounded like crap. I took some of the polyfill out of the box (because it was "crammed in there" and after some crossover adjustments on the amp and the Coustic xover, I got better sound. Before though, I couldn't hear it very well unless I turned the subs towards the rear seats, whereas before it was facing the back of the trunk. I haven't swapped it back around yet, but was wondering how every one else's set ups are in a sedan, facing the back seat or the back of the trunk. The weather went bad on me, so I was unable to try placing them facing the back of the trunk just yet. In the past I have had them facing the back of the trunk or hatch and got better results. The bass sounds pretty good now, but just doesn't hit as hard as it did before. I guess it is partly do to it being in a hatchback which seems to hit hardest. The box is of correct interior cubic inches, so that is not the problem.
Any suggestions of what may be going on? I notice people with boxes facing both the front and the back inside the trunk, but wanted to see what you guys suggest.

i have mine facing the trunk and they sound nice. Sometimes i feel like my trunk lid is going to blow off then the cd skips cuz the bass is too much. well there you go.

Mine should be doing the same thing. They hit really hard in my Eclipse (somewhere in the range of 153 db according the audio control meter used by competitions). The only thing different with my system now compared to before is that I am utilizing an Audio Control Overdrive to boost the voltage of the signal going to the amps. I did have the box custom made before versus a prefab one that I am using now. Maybe there was a little difference in cubic inches (but not by much). I tell you, your ears would feel like you had cotton in them just from 10 minutes in that car. Maybe I can just use the box until I get enough money to get someone to build one according to the specs provided by SoundStream.

Wow!! I just adjusted the SoundStream amp's LSEQ and man those subs are hitting hard now!! I also turned the box around to fire at the rear of the car for a little extra ummphh! This thing sounds just as good as it did in my Eclipse. Also, I have virtually no distortion at very high volumes thanks to the Audio Control Overdrive. Now it is obnoxiously loud! I can pull down the seat to adjust the bass output on the crossover. I used a Boston Acoustics Bass CD (3 CD set) to set the amps LSE controls. Basically, the LSE control works to control the subs so that they will play loud without distorting by cutting too low of frequencies to the subs and boosting other frequencies that are more audible. I am very pleased. All that is left is putting the 6 1/2's in the door. I still would like a box to match the inside of the trunk, but that is just cosmetics. That can wait for now. I'll post some pics as soon as I can.

w/ one of my old systems i had two 10" Infinity Kappa's and i was messing around and try'd one facing in and one facing out ( there is a name for this set-up but I forget it ) and it hit alot harder than regular. I left it!

if you have some spare time, you could try it. If so let us know how it changed the sound.

Are you talking about an isobaric set up with a push-pull configuration? I haven't seen one of those in a long time. I heard one with two 10s and the box was ported, and it was really loud! I don't know why that sort of thing isn't used as much as before. It also saves space. Like Kicker's old slogan with their solobarics, "All the bass and half the space."

Wow, 2 15's and only 143 db's?! I know they probably hit really hard. I hope you dynamatted the hell outta your trunk and welded your rear spoiler to the car!! I am surprised you aren't in the 150 SPL range! I feel for those in the back seat though I got hooked when subs first came out in cars. This guy had a Toyota Supra with 2 15's and it was so incredibly loud when you sat in the back seat. Also, this guy I used to work with had 4 SoundStream SPL160's (15's) with 2000 watts RMS going to them. The box took 3/4ths of the bed of his full size Chevy and had ports all along the back (under the seat in the extra cab part). It was so loud that you could feel your nose and adam's apple vibrating. You had to hold your nose because it "itched" from the vibration! That was too much for me though. I felt like I had a heart pacer hooked up in to an electrical outlet pumping 120 volts through my body. Not to mention your ears hurting from all the bass. He won 2nd place in SPLs to a minivan that had 52 8's! The van was featured in Auto Sound and Security. How low can you go? i think the owner was the owner of a local hifi shop or atleast customer of the century!!

BOOM BOOM not ZOOM ZOOM

HEY MisterT love your signature " custom made hearing aids " funny!!!! ill be needing them soon to i think. yer im a bit pissed off with only 143 db but the amp im running is only 2500 watts and the subs are capable of handling 1500 watts each. Hopefully when i get another amp i can jump to around 146 147 mark. what ya reckon of the boot install mate? I wish i owned a stereo shop that would be wicked. My plan is to get rid of the back seats altogether and put 3 x 15 inch subs in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!! then im hoping to go the 157 mark, that will be where i stop going mad.

Why are you getting more bad than good comments? You have a cool looking set up. I like the custom look. Even if you don't hit 300 decibels, as long as it sounds good to you and looks good, that is all that matters (and it is killer lookin'!)

I just checked out your pics on imagestation and like what you did. Did you do anything in the engine compartment (cold air intake, etc.)? I see you have a NOS switch and an aftermarket exhaust---sweet! One question though, does the muffler take away from the sound system? I want to add some more ponies, but know some of these exhaust notes can leak in to the interior. I like the sound of a deep exhaust note, but some sound like angry bees on steroids! One guy in another forum mentioned it sounds like a "farting" noise I told him that I hope he doesn't take any women on a first date in that thing

talk to you later!
