Question Speaker Wire

Hi,
Just want to add a speaker box behind the rear seats. How would I get the speaker cord back there from the rear door?

Thanks for your help!

Joe

it would probably be just as easy to get them from behind the radio or in the driver kick panel before they enter the front door. Are there speakers offered in the rear section of the P5 or only the doors? If so, then there may be factory speaker wire back there, but just no speakers.

http://www.protege5online.com has some great info on the P5 stereo.

I don't think there is any provision for speakers in the rear of the P5. I assume you are using the factory stereo? Do you want to replace the speakers in the rear door, or add to them? If you want to replace them, you could cut the wires under the carpet before the go into the rear door and add enough wire to them to reach the rear. If you want to add more speakers, you're going to need some other amplification besides the factory stereo.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking. I'm gonna put an amp back there to power a couple speakers/subs. So, the speaker wire passes to the back door through the carpet? How easy is it to get wires back there? How about getting power back there for the amp?

Sorry for all the questions, I've never put an amp in a car before. I'm probably gonna keep the door speakers on the factory amp (unless it's easy to add them to an amp too, that would be great).

Thanks for your help!

Joe_Pro5,

Anything is possible my friend!

If you are adding just an amp/sub combo, you don't need to "cut" any wires, simply tap onto to get the signal. Then you will need a line output converter. This converts the speaker high level to an RCA low level signal. (Unless your amp has this built in) then the RCAs go to the amp. Power must be taken straight off the battery. 8 to 10 guage cable will be fine, when running it thru the firewall, be sure to use a factory grommet or drill a new hole and use an aftermarket grommet. Also make sure to put a 30amp or so fuse inline about 18" from the battery. Use the same size guage cable for the ground wire as you did for the power. Make the ground wire as short as possible and make sure you have a solid connection. Scrape away any paint so you have bare metal. Oh, you may also need a remote turn-on module. If your P5 has a power antenna output, then this is not nesscesary.

If you want to add another 4 channel amp to power the front and rear speakers, you'll need a second line output converter, 2 get 4 channels. Split the rear with the sub and connect the fronts direct. This way you will keep the front rear fading, but the sub will fad with the rear. This would change if you had an aftermarket deck with a dedicated sub output. Although if you add 2 amps, then use 8 to 4guage power/ground cable. There are also 5 channel amps that will power the complete system, this will save a bit of money and space as 1 amp will do the work of 2.

I have everything you need when you decide. Amps, speakers, converters, turn-on modules, etc... I always offer protege members a discount and will help you with as much tech info as i can. Check my site for more info on the gear.
