Well, it's Calgary, and winter here starts in September. I'm almost ready to throw the stock rims back on, and while I'm at it, I'm going to swap out the floor mats for some rubber ones. Winter is really hard on the carpets, and I'd prefer to keep them looking nice. Where could I find some nice rubber floor mats for my P5? I don't think Mazda makes any, but will some generic ones from Wal-Mart fit? The other option is to order some new mats from Mazda, and just use my current ones this winter. They've already seen a winter's worth of use, and are pretty worn out. If that's the route I take, how much will a new set run me?

Any help is appreciated.

I personally like Canadian Tire's 'premium' rubber mats. They're thick, heavy and indestructible. They're the ones with the edges on them that you're supposed to cut off to fit your car, but I found if you leave those on they cover the footwells of the P5 almost perfectly. This week's flyer had them at $14.95 each.

Nick, I use a set I bought from Walmart. Real nice with edges to keep the water/slush in. I found the Pantsaver brand not really that great as there is no edge so sometimes the water is able to get past the mat.

I also use extra protection on the floor during the winter. I lay several sheets of newspaper on the carpet and then lay some plastic sheeting like vapour barrier then a couple more layers of newspaper then the rubber mats. This way if anything gets by the mats (and it will) the paper will soak it up. Mininmizes the amount of water soaking into the carpet.

I wouldn't use newspaper for a liner underneath the mats. I use a cutout of old carpeting leftover from my house and put that in the footwells. They soak up the dirty water pretty good and they don't stain the carpet w/ black newspaper ink. My carpet's blue btw. Might not matter on the p5 since it's black anways.

Dude my mom puts newspaper in the car...all I can say is that it makes a very large mess. Especially the ink in the newspaper...spend the money on some good floormats. If not...go for the ones that they sell at Costco or Sam's Club.

I bought a pair of CostCo pant saver and just traced the pattern of the driver mat and cut off the excess rubber, works great plus if you put the hole in the rubber ones as well it wont move around either.
