service manager warned not to add remote starter
Hey,
...just passing on what I heard:
I recently ran into problems installing an alarm and had to talk to the service rep at the dealer. He asked what kind of alarm I was installing and I told him it was a Crutchfield product. He said, "OK, just don't install remote starters with that car". I wasn't planning on it, so I didn't question him on why. Something you might want to look into, but I bet alot of posters here have already installed remote-start successfully. Could be bologna from the dealer. Who knows.

sounds like BS to me. the only problem that i could think of, is that some vehicles need to have the starter wire cut (that is if you add a starter kill) at a certain point or the Check Engine light will come on.
Not sure if the P5 has an OEM immobilizer, but if it does, you'll need a bypass module.
the P5 is not all that complicated, it's a Mazda, not a Benz. Install and have fun.

Sorry to say this but most mechanics at dealers know squat about electrical stuff in cars. 9 times out of 10 if you take your car in to them and there is some sort of aftermarket stereo or aftermarket electrical equipment then they will blaim it for your problems. I have had people come in and tell me their mechanic said their brakes don't work because of their stereo. HONESTLY!! That would be like you bringing your car to me to get something in the engine fixed, it wouldn't happen because I know car stereo not engines. There is nothing wrong with installing an alarm or remote starter as long as it is done properly. And if they try to give you stuff about voiding your warranty tell them about the Magnuson Moss Act (I think that is it). Sorry for the long post.
oh by the way I like DEI products.
DEI Viper150esp
or
DEI 552T Valet
both are nice units

Remote starter question
hawkjl82, the installation a remote car starter in a p5,mp3... is an easy task for a trained installer (under 1 hrs) just make sure that all the connection are soldered and that no "scotch lock" type of connecting device is used. As for the brand of unit to get i would suggest to go to your favotite install shop and see what they have to offer and select a reputable brand.
my suggestion would be Autostart.
as for your car waranty the dealer cant void your entire car waranty because you got a remote car starter installed but can only void the waranty of a specific part that was damage or broken by the installation or the remote starter. but if such a case occurs just bring it back to your install shop as they are resposable for the install of the remote starter.
hope this help
p.s. sory for my bad english

the installation a REMOTE CAR STARTER in a p5,mp3...
On this specific car (protege 5) i would say 3 hrs should be enough for an experience installer who has already installed in tha model/year of car (not the first 1 he puts in a protege 5).
Mazdaspeedwest, i see that you are located in CA, which brand, type(combo, just alarm, just starter) of system do you guys install over there
im from Mtl and over her remote starter's are very common, 90% of the cars on the roads have them so installers over here get to do them every day not just 1 a day sometimes up to 8 /10 a day in the busy season.
so the more you do the faster you get, especially in a 99 and up protege im sure you agree with me that they are very easy car to install in (remote car starter).
