the rear door stock speakers are NOT 6 1/2"

Okay...I just got done replacing ALL the door speakers in my P5....the REAR DOOR SPEAKERS ARE NOT 6 1/2's....they are in fact 6's!!

now......a nice 6 1/2" speaker will fit with NO PROBLEM at all....but if you want to remove the little plastic splash shields from the stock speakers and put them on your replacements, as I did, they will take some trimming and cutting to make them fit if you are putting 6 1/2's in there insted of some 6's. its do able.....just takes some more work.

and if you are wondering how much room you have in the doors...see my other thead concerning the HOT POOP on P5 door rear spacing.

i didn't think that the rear doors would be different on the p5's. i put 6.5" components in my rear doors just fine. although they only have 3 mounting holes. that's odd that they'd do that.
Don't get me wrong...a 6 1/2 fits in there just fine and dandy....but if you want to re-use the water guard or whatever you call that thing that prevents water from the window from drippin on the speaker you will have to do some serious trimming/modification to it, I did and they are in place....but it took just a little extra time. however if you got a 6" speaker it would drop right in. I replaced my speakers with Rockford Fosgates and they make a 6" universal in the same series as my 6 1/2's had I only known, NOW you all do!

good info. very handy. water does get in the doors, and can damage speakers.
yep...that is why I pryed the guards off of all the stock speakers and installed them on the new replacements....

What did you do to the water guards in order to make them fit? Just wanna get some ideas for my installation...planning to get infinity 652i for the rear doors.

the guard is the EXACT shape of the stock speaker, and your new speakers most likely won't be the EXACT same shape...there is a little lip all the way around them that I trimmed off to make it sit flush....THEN the whole in it is in fact for a 6 inch and not a 6 1/2. SO what I did was actually cut through the rim in two places and remove a section about equal to one third its circumferance. that allowed the guard to actually spread open and fit flush on the mounting flange....then on the opposite side I just put the part I removed under the speaker flange so it was supported all the way around.

make sence?

I see what u're saying. It would be easy if I have a dremel tool and use the disc cutter on the guard.

crutchfield lists the pr5 as having 5 1/4" speakers in the rear door.

not that they know what they're talking about.
but if you say 6 1/2's fit thats good news to me.

the door openings have some extra room.....so I am sure they would....but you would run into the same problem with the 6 X 8 that I did with my 6 1/2's if you were to put the rain guards on them...and I would highly recommend it too. what you REALLY need to pay attention to in the front doors is the speakers mounting depth.....do not try to put a speaker with more than 2 1/2 inches of mounting depth in the door...if you do....the window will hit it when you put it all the way down....OR if you do have a speaker you want to use and the depth is a bit more....you can put spacers between the speaker and the door to make up the difference.

yep...there is a little lip on the guard that curls up around the edge of the stock speaker...you will need to cut that compeltely off...easily done...but then if you used a dremel tool and enlarged the center hole...it may just fit perfect....it would really depend on the speaker you are using....it would be a trail and error sort of thing.
