Ready to bump, I think, nevermind, help!

I finally got my amp on Tuesday and have everything wired up, all that jazz. I've got a eclipse 15" aluminum SVC and a JBL 1200.1. Anyways, how do you go about setting up the sub. I've read descriptions about turning the HU (Alpine 9807 in my case) to 3/4 volume and setting gains from there. Elaborate please. Also, what's this crossover stuff, I have a pretty good idea but I think it easier if yall jus tell me erything. I have some idea what I'm doing, but not enough, this is my first car audio set up. Thanks.

alright the crossover is where you select what freq you want to play and not to play. on a sub you would put the selector to lowpass, and turn the dial to around 80-120hz. thats is a good range to start with. too low of number and you won't get any bass and too high of number and it will put out too much midrange, hurting your sub. when setting gains, there are a few ways to do it. turn up the HU like you said to 3/4 volume. the turn up the gain until it clips, then back it off alittle bit(that is assuming your amp has a clip light on it). or turn it up until you hear distortion(which in a sub is VERY hard to tell for the inexperienced) and then back it off alittle. vertian amps like jl audio actually have you hood up a volt meter and play a certian sin wave and adjust the gain until a certian voltage is reached for a certian ohm load.
