Protege5 Speaker Depth???

anyone have problems installing their speakers? (mount depth too shallow, etc?) if you've upgraded your speakers in the doors, tell me what you got and if they fit okay.

Slight problems when installing the rear Polk 6.5" speakers. The holes didn't line up, so I had to modify the holes on the speakers to make it fit. I used Polk 5x7s in the front and they fit perfectly without any mods. I heard 6x8s can fit also.

Well, from your signature (Front Fuison 5.25 components Rear Fusion 6.5 coaxials), I guess you have already installed aftermarket speakers, so you should have an idea what fits and what doesn't.

mazda emailed me back about the mounting depth so if anyone needs to know, i'll post it here!

front door- 2.5 inches
rear door- 2.0 inches

for those on the metric system, you'll have to do the math cause i'm too lazy to convert that...

Hi

I was looking for the Kenwood KFC-P683C Component System (6x8, 2 way, with seperate tweeter, 140 Euros = 140 $) to install it into my 323 F (German Version, 2001).
This system has a mounting depth as said in the catalog of 64 mm which is 2.52 " .

Does anyone have any information about the tolerance of the values given by Mazda concerning the 2.5 inches for the front door ?

Is it possible to mount the 2.52 inches or is the value given by mazda very tight.

Any information appreciated. Thanks.

Horst

i now have Clarion Power System 6.5" Coaxial Speakers (SRR1684), they have a mounting depth of 2'1/32" they fit okay in the back (magnet) but the tweeter is so damn tall on those that i had a cut a hole in teh factory grill (which is just plastic, a utility knife will cut it no prob but i prefer the awsome power of the dremel )

got some room to play with.. its not "EXACT" the glass will not go down to where the back of the magnet is on the speaker but if its too close to the outside metal then it might rub/rattle

I've got MB Quart 6.5", and tweets in all my doors with no mounting issues, looks stock (well except for the tweeters of course).

Sweed,
I'm planning on installing my Q's in the front doors as well, did you use an aftermarket bracket or did you make one yourself?

Hi

Thats fine, then I will probably buy those Kenwoods. They have a seperate tweeter, so there is no issue in this.

Thanks a lot

The only real modification you have to make is with a drill, and one hole. The mounting holes for the Quart's don't line up perfectly with the stock 5X7 locations. But you can get two of them to line up perfectly then rotate it a little so you have the two holes in stock locations then make a thrid drill hole that is fairly equidistant in the between the other two holes for secure mounting. You don't have to do any cutting, and a little frickin hole is nothing really to get all excited about on a part of your ddor that will never be seen. Then Since the stock location is a 5X7 and you wanna put some 6.5"'s in there well of course there will be some open space. I simply dynamatted my doors, and made it a tight seal around the small opening. They sound great and required minimal effort for mounting. That's for the front, the rear doors I was able to just bolt the speaker in no changes at all.

Thanks for the info sweed. I'll probably wind up sealing off the sides with something solid like a thin piece of ABS to isolate the front and rear waves.

Yep that ABS would work too, probably maybe even a little better idea than my dynamat job, as the ABS is more rigid. Good luck man.

I put JL audio XR component woofers in the doors with a 1/2" mounting adapter with no problems.
