You will definately need an amplifier to push any component set.
I previously had an Eclipse with a 12" JLaudio sub, and MBquart fronts consisting of 6 1/2" mid bass, 4" mids and 3/4" tweets and . They have a very clean sound. The P~5 factory sound and speaker set up sucks after having my previous system. This is why I'm looking for some system ideas for my P~5.

SWEEDENHOUSE,
I'll be starting my install soon and I was just wondering about your install.
How does your speaker set up sound with the tweets low in the doors and 6 1/2 mid bass? Does it sound hollow when you roll down the windows like it does with the stock speakers? How does the rear door speakers sound from the front seat? Also did you sound deaden the doors or hatch?
thanks for your input.

Silver1, let me know how your install goes, too, because I want to do a speaker swap, probably this summer. The stock cardboard just isn't doing it for me.

I'm wondering about not putting 5x7's in front. I went to a local shop and listened to a whole bunch of 6.5s and then a slew of 5x7's, and not even the somewhat more expensive 5x7's (MB Quarts) sounded very good. Oval speakers, feh. Anyone put 5.25s or 6.5's up front in your P5? What'd you have to do to make 'em fit?

dunno how old this post is or whatnot but thought i'd share. i used 5.25 components in the front (needed an adapter), and 6.5 coaxials in the rear. my amps are mounted under the seat and my sub is in the back (duh!). pics are linked in my sig...

oh yeah, mazda's mounting depth for the p5 is 2.5"front and 2.0"rear. but i think it's kinda forgiving on the rear cause my speakers were a little deeper than 2inches...

I actually did the installation of my system. The 6x8's fit in with no problem. The only thing I had to do was put some foam gasket material around the mount for the speaker to fill in a few tiny gaps between the mount and the door.

The 6x1/2's in the rear required a couple of holes a piece to be drilled, also I put a foam gasket between the speaker mount and the door. I have Infinity separates so I had to mount the tweeter. All I had to do there was use a hole saw to cut a hole in the door and used the mounting hardware that Infinity supplied. The trick there is to find a spot on the door that has some room between the panel and the door. Also I just mounted the crossovers inside the doors by using the foam gasket material.

The sound is great, I get the highs from the front and rear because the rear tweeters are swiveled towards the front, and I get more midrange from the 6x8's than if I installed 6.5's in the front.

The speaker wire was a challenge but well worth the effort. I drilled a hole on the inside of the door sill and one under the door sill plate and ran the wire through with a coat hanger. Each door has a small black grommet that can be removed to run the wire into the door for the speakers.

JCIL,
Thanks for your info and tips. Following your advice I will now use 6 1/2 seperates and 6x8's in the rear doors. The pics of your car are nice, the RED accent color throughout your install gives it a cool look. I havn't started yet on my engine but your intake install looks great and your custom bottom scoop is tight. When you get a chance can you e-mail me some info on that install. Is there a noticable boost in power? (hopefully) and how does it sound? The reason I ask is on my previous car it sounded a little rough in 1st gear and fine throughout the rest of the powerband.

I guess you have a P5 and said it the wrong way, it is 6x8's in the front and 6.5's seperates in the rear doors. Just making sure I will send some info on the intake but first I have to get my taxes out of the way The intake sounds great and is smooth.

I went to Circuit City to check out speakers and dynamat. They suggested some Infinity 6x8 coaxials w/ adjustable tweeter. Does any body have these speakers and how does it sound in your car?
I also would like to quite my ride and so my speakers will sound better. They (CCity) also recommended buying 2 dynamat trunk kits @ 98 bucks apiece to do all the doors + (hatch) and trunk. Then if i wanted them to do the install of dynamat it would be 60 an hour and approx time of 4-5 hr job. Has any body installed this themselves and please let me know? It doesn't look that hard but who knows. the stuff smells like asphalt I wonder how long it smells after it installed? I checked on the net
www.car-audio-discount.com and found it cheaper for 75. and they compared it with product from cascade for 69. which is supposedly better. Anyway let me know what you think.

They were kind of pushy trying to sell me everything in the car audio display. I was there just checking on some prices and checking out some new decks. They didn't seem to be to sure of a few things and their prices kept fluctuating when asking about getting something installed. I definately agree with you, I won't be going there to buy anything or get it installed. Thanks for the warning.
