Exclamation Paint on P5 not B/C

I have found out that the paint on the Protege5 is not a base/clear paint job, it's single stage!!! This applies only to solid colors.

I am a painter for a body shop in Sask. Last week I was polishing some small scratches out of my fender when my polishing pad was turning yellow. This only happens when the paint is a single stage paint job.

I was quite surprised because most if not all paint these days are base/clear. I don't know if all Mazda cars are this way but chances are good that they are.

There is nothing wrong with the paint it self so don't anyone worry, I am just letting everyone know what I have found out!

I think what your talking about are the first thousand or so yellow Protege5. These cars were used in commercials and other marketing activities and hence they didn't have clearcoat. The other colors, base and metallic all do. You could tell the color difference between these yellow P5 apart, where the non-clearcoat ones has sort of a deeper color.

This is what I heard from long ago on this forum or the TPC forum, and I'm not sure myself. Anyone is welcome to correct me.

Leung is right. Only the Vivid / SUnburst yellow P5's were not clearcoated. I've buffed my red P5 many times and no red comes off.

Why should they? It's such a popular color, and it (being yellow) hides scratches, etc. better than any other color. It saves them money.

i just don't think it's right or very fair for mazda to not do the clear coat on the sunburst yellow p5's. they should have done all the cars the same way.
