Nite Shades Tint

i want to blackout my taillights. but lately i've been really confused whether this is illegal or not. i've been told that you can still see the lights when they're lit, but i also heard that you have to have a reflective part seen. . . but heard u can see it if light is shined on it. i dunno someone please tell me if this is legal in NJ.

I don't really want to tint it, but more like black it out, so it will match the black of the paint. any feedback on this is appreciated. thanks.

I don't know the N/J laws, but here in Maine they have to be seen upto a so many feet. I put the SVT nightshades on, then talked to a local cop and was told they look fine. I put 4 coats on the toped it off with 3 coats of clear. I like the effect I got. I have a blue P5 and the dark lights looks good IMO.

I believe the Nite Shades stuff IS legal, as long as you don't lay it on so thick that you can't see the red in the taillights.

It's really not state law, it's federal DOT regulations - you have to have red lighting for tails. The Nite Shades allows a surprising amount of light through - but it'll always be up to the individual cop's opinion on ticketing you.

I'd say you could do it, just don't go all the way to black - that I would guess, would be illegal.

But trying to find out the laws is a good idea - there are some strange ones. For example, in NY, it is 100% illegal to cover ANY of the text on a license plate, including the top portion that says New York - even covering it a little bit is illegal. This makes 99% of all licence plate frames (including the dealer frames they put on new cars!) against the law. Of course, it's not enforced, but get a dick cop, and it might be. Know your rights before you do the mod - it'll help.

Not sure where to buy - probably a bunch of places.

The company is "VHT" - so try a search or two.

Oh alright - if you choose to be lazy, check this link - I found a few auctions for the stuff:

I found it at a speed shop in the Mall in Manchester CT. I am sure any speed shop can get it for you. I plan the do my side amber marker lights the same, and my high mount brake light on the rear wing

irish, i like ur tails, they're nice.

o man that sucks though, i wanted to completely blacken the whole entire tail lol. i guess that can't happen. i'm wondering though if i do part of the tails would it look good still? or maybe if i cover the whole thing but not till it's all black, just a slight tint of it.

BL, I think he's got his lights on.

It looks like he tinted the entire light, like what you are considering, but has his headlights on in the picture (you can see the license plate bulbs are on, too) - nice way to see what red shows through.

Go for a nice mellow tint - too much is gonna get you pulled over for sure, and is that really worth it? I think irish's tails look great - they'd look even sweeter on a black car.

Hey
Yeah I did tint the hole light assy. I will take a picture durring the day time so you can see them. In the picture below my lights are on. Here is an idea for you. Go to walmart and get some transparent plastic that sticks to things. Dark that out with the spray, clean your lights, then put that on, and trim to size once it on the car. Drive around for a couple of days and see if you get any bad affects from it. Hell try to find a cop and ask them to look at them to see if they are alright. Then if you like them, remove the light assy and paint them. Make sure you use clear coat or you will get little scratches in the tint and will have to recoat them. Thats why I have 4 coats of tint on them.

Doesn't the Nite Shades clean off rather easily? Like with acetone or something like that?

If it does, it's easy enough to spray it on, then see how things work out. Talk to a few cops, make sure you like it, etc. Then you can clear coat it once you decide to keep it, or even re-do it if it somehow gets screwed up during the time before clear coating it.

Dude - I seriously doubt you'll have any issues as long as you don't go totally black. Look at some of the cars that come with darkened lights already - some older Maxima's, a few VW's - I think even a year or two of the RX7 had "smoked" lights - you can see the red, but it is definitely darker than normal red tails. But it illuminates red the same, which is really what matters.

Personally - I think you're getting too concerned about the legalities. It's just a little tint on the tails - don't go black, and you'll be fine, legal or not, IMHO.
