new steering wheel?

I want to get a different steering wheel for my pro but i'm a bit fuzzy on some issues, mostly on the legality of installing a non airbag wheel in my car, i keep hearing its legal then hearing its illegal, also what about taking one from a mx-3 , or another mazda that looks nicer and using that one?

In Pennsylvania it is illegal to install a non-airbag aftermarket wheel unless the car was in an accident and the bag went off. In which case the state allows you to save the money of getting the bag repacked. I don't know how strict any of your inspection stations or cops are, but I don't think anyone would give you **** about it. If the laws are the same there you could tell any cop that pulls you over that it was in an accident, and thats if he even asks in the first place...

Just make sure to tell your insurance company if you remove the airbag.

If you get in an accident (especially if it's your fault), for sure they will try to hedge any medical claims you make stemming from injuries that your airbag could have prevented. They'll pay, but will probably try not to pay the whole amount, and it could just be a major hassle.

You might pay more for insurance, but be honest - it could save you some trouble down the line.

BTW - I would see if you can pop in a P5 or MP3 wheel. A P5 is probably more widely available, and you might be able to find a junkyard wheel in good shape at a good price. Who knows - might still have the airbag if it was a rear-end total.

Most of the time (non-airbag wheels) you can replace the steering wheel with any wheel you want as long as it is the same diametre as the one before - no less, no more.

That is how it is here at least.

Some Miata LS's had/have a 3 spoke wheel just like the P5's only it is solid leather the whole way around the rim. It has a nice looking blue Nardi badge in the middle, so you won't have the M emblem from 99+...Just hope you can find one at a junkyard, Last I checked with a dealer about one it was over $900

MX-3 Steering Wheels

This link will take you to look at all the different steering wheels the MX-3s had over the years.

Not that great, IMO. I can't wait to ditch mine.

Personally I would go with the MP3 wheel. It looks great and has a peche air bag. I called my agent today and he told me I would not be covered under my PIP if something were to happen. Also that the other ins. company if aplicable would not have to pay for medical bills if the air bag could have prevented injury. IE..frontal/side frontal accident.

again i run into the problem of it looking tacky since all of my car has the flame symbol then my steering wheel has a big flying M.... plus just curious but how do they prove the steering wheel would have prevented injurie instead of making it worse like it does in some cases? i personally hate airbags but will keep it if i can find a wheel i like

The "flame" symbol impression in your chest might be the giveaway.

I can't think of single instance where an airbag will make things "worse" as you say, especially today's advanced units.

If you're in a collision, an airbag will save your life.

I can't understand why you would "hate them" - do you "hate" seatbelts, too? If so, best of luck.......
