Unhappy New Car Smell Gone...

...and left a 'skunky' smell in it's place.

Did this happen to anybody else? Oh, and my grooming habits are very good, so no need to start telling me it's me!!

go to your local walmart... head over to the auto accessories section, and find the little chew-can look-a-like airfreshenors. pick up one called "mountain medley". stick it under your seat... smells like new again. ;D

Mountain Medley you say?

I prefer the vanilla one myself..

I want to avoid putting air fresheners in to mask it. I'd rather fix the smell and keep it neutral and skunk-free or at least the new car smell for as long as possible...

Do you think the skunk smell could be caused the sun baking my car all day and the new car smell getting ripe as a result?

oh... it actually does smell all funked up? n/m then. don't mask it! hehe. my new car smell just decided to up and leave one day. so i replaced it with that. smells like the new car smell, but... sweeter! awww. you checked around, make sure some sort of small animal didnt die in your car? lol. seriously though... look around under the hood, it's not uncommon for you to hit something, and pieces of it get stuck there and funk up the ride.

I checked and cleaned the interior to a spotless state (an obsessive compulsive would have been proud) but that didn't solve it. Never really checked under the hood for anything cuz it's not a continuous smell.. only there on warm days after the car's been sitting a while. Goes away as soon as the air starts circulating and stays gone till the car sits again.

Other than a skunk, know of anything that smells skunky when it gets warm? Does new car smell smell skunky when the car gets hot inside?

I'm almost due for a checkup at my dealer so maybe i'll mention it to them when i go in...

Start smoking cigarettes - that'll funk up any previous funk. Just ask my poor Protege - I wasn't gonna smoke in it, but about a mile from the dealership, the first dirty thing on the car was the cigarette lighter!

Damn - going up to $6 or more a pack here in NY soon - time to quit, or get a cheaper habit - like cocaine (soon, hard drugs WILL be cheaper than smokes).

Oh, and about the stank - I've been reading that using the A/C can cause condensation in the vents, which soon turns to mildew in the hot sun - thus the stanky.

If you can spray some mildew killer - maybe even Lysol - down the vents, it might help. Then in the future, try to run the A/C, but with the temp UP for like 30 seconds before leaving the car. The warm, but dehumidified air (from the A/C still being on, but HOT) will get rid of excess moisture in the vents, and will warm them up so no more condensation occurs. Sounds like a pain, but you should only have to do this if you run the A/C on a long-ish drive - short trips probably don't cool the vents enough to cause major condesation.

Do a search, you'll find more info, I think.

hihoslva may be right. If your smell is like mold/mildew then it's probably in the a/c system.

In regards to getting the new car smell back, I've seen a spray that is supposed to smell like new car. Seriously! My friend has some, but I haven't smelled his car lately

I'm not sure I'd use it though...it looked kind of like an oil and I wasn't sure what it would do to the seats. Oh well...thought I'd throw my $.02 in.

ah well.. i'll track it down sooner or later.. need a nice day where i can spend some quality time and find where the funk is coming from...

i can tell you it's not from my left thigh, or my grandfathers feet...

You know - I have to admit that I've noticed it too. Really does smell like skunk more than anything else.

A skunk smell? Like real skunk or that kind of "skunk" that is grown, dried, "combusted" and inhaled?

I'm only half kidding - sometimes weed will stink up your air filters and stuff - not accusing - just asking.

Did you guys have your car undercoated when you bought it? My car was pretty stinky for the first little while, and it was the undercoating that was the culprit.

!!!! i did !!!!!

But that was in February.. It didn't smell at all when I first got it, but mind you it was pretty cool out and smells generally stay hidden in the cold. Now that it's warming up outside I notice it all the time.

You think it could be that even though it's been like 3 months?

Was it a skunky smell?

The heat could be causing it to smell for sure. Stick you head in the wheel well and take a snort.

I don't know if it smelled like skunk...but it was an interesting smell for sure.

I still think mine has a faint odor even now.
