My enclosure is DONE - HELL YEAH!!

Okay - well 99% done. A few odds and ends need tying up - a couple screws, etc. But it IS DONE!!

Here we go:

The "grille" is made with 1/2" solid aluminum rod - purchased at Home Depot, and bent, drilled, sanded and "brushed" by hand. Told ya' I had something up my sleeve for a nice grille - industrial-looking, and industrial strength, too.

But DON'T ask me how it SOUNDS yet - I still don't have my amps, so it's not even hooked up! .

This was a fun project - and I'm proud of the results. Feel free to ask anything about how it was done - I know a lot of you guys are getting interested in fiberglass, and I'd be glad to help out if I can. But I'm NOT building one for you!

Thumbs up

Nice job......you must feel good that it is done and it looks nice. Keeps from having a big box, taking up lots of trunk space.

Good job.

Good job man.. I like the fact u dont have to be scared to carry stuff in the back. With those rods it should be very strong

That looks slick, HiHo! SO I guess you'll be out amp shopping this aster weekend then?

The rods looks great. Is there enough clearance between the rods and the speaker?

I like how you got the speaker mounting holes in a straight line even across the angle between the speakers - very nice.

Hey - I see what look like scratches on your bumper. I know you carry tools and **** back there - you should consider getting the bumper protector plate. I got one to prevent scratches from the dog getting in and out of the car. Looks decent and it does the job.

Dale.

There should be plenty of clearance between the subs and the rods.

I used small sections (about 1" long) of 3/8"OD hard copper pipe to prop up the rods. Then the mounting screws go through the rod, through the pipe, through the sub, and into a tee nut in the MDF sub ring. Very secure. I painted the small copper pipe sections with black spray paint - you can kinda see them in one of the pics.

As far as my bumper - most of what you see is just filth - not scratches. Truth is, there are some nicks on the vertical surface of the bumper, from parking garage idiots who don't know how to valet the car without tapping people. I DO have the bumper guard - but I've been procrastinating on installing it until --- I get those stupid nicks fixed . One day....

That's as professionaly done as you can get. Very nice!

How many hours of labor would you say it took you to finish it? And the cost?

Best guess? About 15-20 hours labor, and about $150 in materials. I'm really guessing on the labor, because I built this up over several weeks. And the cost - I wasted a LOT of resin during certain "drenching" periods. So I'd think the cost could be significantly lower if materials are used properly - maybe down to about $100-$120. I also think someone with more experience (remember - this is my FIRST ever fiberglass..... anything!) could knock the fabrication time down also. I'd bet an experienced installer could pump this thing out in one work day, maybe two.

Right on! That looks awsome! Wish I had that kind of talent (and patience). I don't blame you for not wanting to make one for some one else. I saw your pics of the building in progress and what a mess it seems! I also like the rods covering the subs versus the traditional grills. Way to go.

That one excellent job you did ,You should be proud of what you have done . I have a suggestion if you want to hear the subs ,why not hook them up to your home system . This will give you an idea of how it will sound .

Not a bad idea, macklum.

Unfortunately, I don't have much of a home system. A couple of shelf-type systems, and a DVD player with internal amp for the 5.1 surround. Absolutley nothing with any kind of power.

I can wait it out - I have a good feeling it'll be tight. But I suppose I can hook it up to the sub-out on the DVD if I get antsy, even if it isn't that powerful.

And I do know the enclosure is pretty well sealed - when I push on one sub, the other pops out - always a promising sign......
