Now for the true kicker question...

Would it be considered rice if the owner of a Lexus IS300 changed their tailights to solid red, or red with an orange blinker?

I think its really hard to say whether one thing is rice or not these days, as almost everybody has a slightly different definition of what is 'rice'. I think it really boils down to what looks good to you, and to others in general. I personally think that JDM conversion can look cool, if it is done tastefully and accurately, given that the JDM design looks good in the first place. Performance wise, if JDM parts set-up performs better & that's what you want, & can afford the price, why not go for it?

Some people may say altezza lights are rice, but they may look awesome to others. Even Japanese car lovers import APC altezzas from the U.S. to Japan. Just spot a red 4-door Honda Civic(previous model) in the STAGE magazine(a popular Japanese car mag.) in a Japantown bookstore that won an award in the dress-up department. It has a set of APC altezza carbon fiber at the back, cf-hood, full body kit, super nice interior trim details. And surprisingly, Japanese are paying for around US$300(32,000yen) for importing a set of those altezzas! Man!! Too bad I don't have a copy of the mag, otherwise, I may scan some pics of a lot of cars appeared in the mag. They dedicated quite a number of pages, just showing youngsters, couples, families, and pros who drop tons of money to decked out their cars. I was quite amazed by the level of detail, the workmanship, and the amount of money these Japanese spent on their cars. Some just look like spaceship cockpit from good sci-fi movies. While some may be way over the top, they are more like in a way that "someone spent like US$15,000 to decorate a US$7,000 worth Daihatsu's interior". They look way way better than any stuff you normally see in US car mags. And when I see cars like that, the judgement of them being rice or not pretty much melts to 'how nice' or 'not nice they are' instead.

Really wish I had those pics to share

Enjoy your rides however you want

Exactly...

If you like to modify, do it...just make sure you take two steps back and look at your vehicle to make sure this is the image you want to portray...

Just make sure you do not do a "Yellow Bird."

I will attach images later of what I mean.

Not rice if...

I don't think it's rice if he goes all out. If he gets the Altezza gauges, front ends, etc. etc. and it basically becomes a left hand drive Altezza..then no rice in that. It's rice if he puts on the Altezza emblems on a stock IS300. Two different things.

Just like the new trend is with converting the Nissan 240's into Nissan Silvias...Engine swap and all.

Jonny

they do that in saudi arabia. they leave the damn plastic wrap on the seats too.

best example i saw. big frickin' TAHOE with the giant invoice sticker on the front passenger window. you know, the one you need to see through to turn left? covered the whole window almost.

IMO Altezzas arent rice...they dont advertise speed or anything and they dont make your car look fast. They are just a set of brake lights w/o all that crappy red and amber.

Yeah like GT-R badges on a Kia.

OMG!!!

What was that person thinking...he probably stole that off a Nissan Skyline...seems to be a front grill emblem...Those are some pretty horrendous hack jobs he did on the rear tail-light...but hey...a hacksaw and some bondo will do wonders. (for a day)

Is that individual trying to imitate this?

Rice

To me, is just the amount of money that goes in to one's car and the way ppl spend it on their ride. Like spending money on appearance mods w/o the performance. Adding front and rear spoilers and big wings w/o the engine capabilities. Adding badges and stickers that clearly don't belong eg: gtr badges, and type R stickers, Vtec badges, Spoon logos. Also the weed whacker sounding exhausts and the rattling that accompanies them. Please take time to do it right!!!
Then there's the exterior mods that don't look right, like wide body kits that have gaps, the hoods that don't fit, a conversion gone wrong, etc...

There are lots of terms for 'rice' and it's just really hard to pin down since a lot of ppl have diff. opinions. Well there's my take on it.
