Is this "golden ratio" stuff a bunch of crap?

I'm still concidering a custom sub enclosure and I keep reading about the "golden ratio" for box construction that minimizes panel resonance...but looking at sub manufacturers that provide enclosed sub systems, none of their enclosures follow this rule. In fact, I really can't find one box that was built to this magical calculation. Has anyone used this ratio before? I created a volume calculator with this ratio and it does produce some odd shaped boxes...10 5/16 x 14 5/16 x 6 15/16 external dimensions for a .4 cu. ft. box with 3/4" mdf...any ideas?

Ask Blue, he is the box building god! He even has a program to give you best enclosures for the make of subwoofers. He even sat in my car and told me the best frequency to tune in to for SPL contests according to the resonance of the interior of the Protege. He has a knack for this stuff. He also has this crazed look in his eyes too! (only kidding about the last part), but he is good.

I should just get the eDesigns 10" K series and build the box they have on the website and put this little sub issue to bed...it's taken me so long to decide on a sub system and I'm sick of it

Have you seen my thread? "Help me decide on a sub & amp combo"
Go check it out. I've chosen the 12" K and I'm building the box right now. I still have to pick an amp though.

Yeah...I'm ready for the eDesign....unless another deal pops up that I can't refuse.

I was planning to go with a sealed enclosure just because of personal preference...I've liked the sound of the sealed enclosures I've had in the past and they seem to fit my music style a bit better, and I figure if a company gives out box designs for their subs than you would be safe to use it...besides, if I have to wait one more day for ID subs to come off backorder I might change my mind 12 more times so that's it...eDesigns and I'm done...there goes the budget

people talk about "ideal" enclosures and all the other crap, but really it all depends on what you want out of it, how much space you're willing to give up, how much power, etc. there are too many variables involved. as far as panel resonance is involved, don't worry about it. that's more for home audio. the plans e-design has up are very well designed. and i'm sure they did extensive testing to make sure it would make their customers happy i did some testing of my own on it with my program, and it is a very well designed ported enclosure. i doubt it will have any port noise, it's tuned low, so it'll have high SQ, like a sealed box, only louder, and it'll drop a lot lower than a sealed box
Speaking of which, when are you going to build me a ported box for my 12s? I got to see about getting rid of the dimming problem first before hand, but I found myself adjusting the bass from the headunit to +1 which I always kept on "O." It gives me a little more kick, but not too much that the mids are straining.

That's cool. I still have to do some rewiring. I am not sure, but was thinking of using EDesigns' box, but again, not sure just yet. I am also maybe looking in to using the big amp on the highs and just buying a Class D mono amp to push the subs so I can get more volume all around. Again, not too sure though. Money is a big issue, but isn't it always. Any one looking for a room mate in Charleston SC? LOL
