Question No one answered the question

I have already made the mesh grille for my MP3. But the question is how do you attach it? Wire ties? Has anyone ordered the one from AT Grilles? How do they say to attach it over your present grille. Thhis question was asked in another thread but never answered. Any knowledge would be helpful. Thanks.

Yes, you attach the atgrill by a thin strand of wire in a few key places. Its pretty micky mouse but it works.

Thumbs up

Thanks, I'll do that until a grille made by a real manufacturer comes out. I don't know why anyone would buy the one from AT Grilles. You can make about 4 or 5 of them for $3.65 for the mesh and about $7 for the tin snips. Maybe I should start makeing them and selling them to pay for some parts.

im sorta in the process of making my own grill right now, and i got it all figured out basically but, wont it look sorta wierd/ugly if you have a nice clean mesh grill but the stock grill behind it. Like this is just a question of curiosity but wont you be able to see the black stock grill behind your nice mesh one? I dunno, just thinking, can someone please post pics(and possibly close up chots) of their custom grill or even one from AT Grill. I know theres like those 2 or 3 pics of the grill on a blue P5 that are used on the ebay auctions and on protege5online, but does anyone have any personal pics of custom ones or even their own pics of theit AT Grill. THanks.

I just got the AT Grills in & got one installed on my car. Looks very nice (a little tedious to install). I've got pics but its a new camera so I gotta get them onto this computer. I will post as soon as I get it. Looks nice.

it all depends what size the holes in the mesh are, and at what angle you're looking at it from. I know that the lower grill will look fine for sure, and the upper one as well, unless people look at it when it's park and come up really close to it. I do'nt know what to do with the Mazda symbol that's in the middle.......I'll have to go around it.

Okay....$80 for a grill????? I went to lowe's and bought two pieces of gutterguard for 3 bucks, cut it to fit the top and bottom of my 99 ES (including the two foglight holes) and used a coathanger to tie the top together. Looked really good for the $5 I had in it.

Lightbulb Idea to dress up grille - REAL CHEAP!

Here's a trick I used to spice up the plastic grille on an old Camaro I had.

Took a little bit of time, but well worth it and pretty easy, too.

Take off the grilles and use masking tape to tape off all of the front exposed edges - this might take some time, but do it right. Make sure every edge that faces the front of the car is taped well - but only those edges. The tape can hang off on either side of each piece, but don't wrap it around on to the other surfaces.

Pick a color of paint - preferably spray paint. Match or complement the color of your ride - it's your choice. Get the best quality paint you can find - automotive paint from a body shop would be best, but a real high quality exterior spray paint will do fine.

Spray the grille from the INSIDE, laying the face (all of the taped edges) downward. Take your time - just use dusting coats, make sure the insides of each cell of the grille pattern gets painted. Take a full day and do as many coats as it takes to fully cover all the black surfaces. Go REALLY light with each coat - any drips will ruin the whole shebang.

Once it dries, peel the tape from the front edges. What you will have now is a colored grille with all of the front-facing edges black- unpainted. It really makes the grille stand out, and gives it a more agressive look.

I have NOT yet done this to my P5 - but I probably will soon. I just have to find the time. When I get it done, I will post some pics somewhere. It definitely looked bad-*** on my '79 Camaro (love my P5, but still miss my 'maro). I actually did the opposite on the Camaro - the grille was the same color as the body, so I painted all of the inside surfaces black, but the procedure is the same and it should look nice.

The better the paint, the longer it'll last, but you might have to re-coat at some point. And if you somehow screw up (drips, bad masking, etc.) you can always paint the grille black again and start over or do something else. All in all, a cheap and reversible mod.
