Double DIN & MP3??

I have the Kenwood MP8017 installed in my P5 right now, and while I thouroughly enjoy the deck, I'm not too keen on the single DIN/crappy pocket setup anymore.

I'd really like to find a double DIN unit, but I don't know if any play MP3s, and I am really diggin' the MP3 capability of the Kenwood.

Does anyone know of a dbl DIN head unit that can play MP3s?? Any news of any soon to be released? I'm not doing this right away, so I can wait for something if there are any units due out soon.

Another thought - has anyone installed an EQ in the second DIN space, instead of a pocket? Is it worth it? I've seen units that are definitely a bit pricey - do they add enough to the sound and flexibility to justify the price?

Thanks all. And to those who care, I got engaged to my lovely lady this past Saturday. We're gonna have a Protege-themed wedding. I'm just kidding, but she slapped me anyway.

No problem - It's in perfect shape, too, and of course I'd be looking to sell it.

I still need info on the dbl DINS, though. I might have to choose between looks and MP3 functionality, but I'd love to have both.

Keep up with the boards - I'll definitely offer my deck for sale here before I go to eBay, assuming I find what I'm looking for and sell the Kenwood.

Nothing at Crotch-field, but I did find this bad-*** ****:

Kenwood DPX-8020MD

This is one SWEET deck. They are not sold retail in the US, according to what I've read. But I did find a guy who imports them shipped to you for $799 - thought that was a real decent price, too. And once I paint the "champagne" interior trim a nicer shade of silver (already planned), that deck will look even slicker.

Hmmm........the search will continue, but I got a feeling my credit card will take a nice wallop one day very soon - don't know how long I can hold off on that sweet K'wood.

you should stick with the single din and get something else put where you have the pocket if you don't like it. Turbo timer, N20 switches, have a carbon fiber panel made and mount the switches on it. in fact i can get the panel made for you and you can put the switches on it. If anyone is interested in any carbon fiber stuff let me know.....I can get almost anything fabricated.

Lightbulb Optional TV

I have put a Clarion MAX-2256 in the dash of my 2002 P5. I have DVD, MP3, CD, Tape, CD Changer, Rear Camera and infered camera in the front grill all controlled by this deck. I will try to include a picture for you of the dash. There is no kit for my car yet. I have to do some major mods to get it in the dash. The deck sells for $2200.00, but you can get a fresh reconditioned unit for $700.00 the deck comes with AM/FM CD TAPE.

another cool thing would be like a portable hard drive thing for the other slot, so you could have ALL your mp3's right there. I would definately go for one of these if i had the cash right now. Neo 35

Cool sonicblue.com

If you go to sonicblue.com and go to RIO car, they have a hard drive car stereo. This unit is pricy, but you can load up to 1500 mp3's on one hard drive. Free mp3's are getting hard to find. Go take a look and post what you think.

Thanks Scott

Wel, the NEO is not a DIN unit - it is a remote mount like a CD changer.

Basically, the point was to find a double DIN unit for the looks, with MP3 capability for the functionality.

I'm still drooling over that K'wood, and haven't found any other DINx2 size unit that plays MP3s.

if you get the adapter for the Neo 35 you can mount it in dash. but I'm going to keep the stock changer for a while, so I'm going to mount it somewhere else in the car. I'm just not to sure where yet. I was thinking under the passenger seat, but I'm afraid that the heat vents may cause problems. any ideas where to mount it?

hihoslva,

I would definitely use the 2nd pocket for a good EQ/Sound processor. Most headunits don't have that much flexibility.. yes they offer different sound "pre-sets" but most only come with a 3-band EQ.

As for that Kenwood DDin that was posted above, I see no use in a casette player. :/ That is just wasting the space.

Also, most HU's are so pricey not just because of claimed flexibility, but also the fact that it's a 2002-2003 model, or Satelite radio ready, blah blah. I chose the Blaupunkt Casablanca CD51 because of it's 5-band parametric EQ, 5v preouts, and can careless it doesn't have Satelite radio functions or MP3 playback.. and it's a previous year's model.. which is why I can get it for $126!

Oh, and congrats on the engagement!

Ya I know.. but it would be so much cooler if they didn't have the casette player and instead, integrated a badass 13-band EQ with various crossovers!

that would ever happen . i think if ANY manufactor had that integrated with a inexpensive HU, they would take the market by storm, but since noone has, they sell them sep. and make more money.
