Door handles/locks

Door handles/locks
Hopefully this makes sense...
In some cars when the doors are locked, and you try to open the door (from the inside) the door unlocks when you pull on the handle..
Now.. *I* don't want to cut anything apart or anything.. I want to take it somewhere to get it done.. but I'm wondering if it is even possible to do this to the P5? Anyone have a guess on how expensive?
This may seem like a silly thing to want to do to my car.. but I *LOVE* my car..and want her to be perfect.. this is just one of the 'nice to haves' on my list

I don't think it is possible with our P5s since the locks are electric. Hmmm I may be wrong on that though (Normally the case).
The lock style you are talking about is the old style where the locking lever arm is connected to the latch itself.

I've seen cars with power locks that had it.. (my fathers minivan for example) so I thought it *might* be possible some how.. but probably extremely "funky".. I don't know..it's all magic to me

The locks are acutated by a motor so there still is a metal rod that you can rig something up to. The door handle has a metal rod too that goes to the latch mechanism.
It is possible to rig something up but there is one problem. The rod for the lock goes up and down while the rod for the door handle goes from left to right.

All you need to do is install microswitches in the door that are activated when you pull the door handle level out a small way. These microswitched would have to be connected to the central lock/unlock button on the drivers door. The effect would be the same as pressing the central unlock as you begin to pull the door lever.
I think you would have to adjust it to trigger before the handle is pulled all the way, since with many cars pulling the door handle all the way will prevent the lock from moving.
(How many people have pulled on the exterior door handle just before the person in the car hits the unlock switch, only to find that your door does not unlock while the handle is pulled? )

It is possible, but power locks aren't necessary. This type of door lock first appeared on american cars and the Japanese imports have adopted them. Nissan and Toyota come to mind. You don't have to worry about the power door lock motor itself, as you will only need to somehow attach it to the lock plunger. The only thing is, if you do this, if someone pulls on the door handles from the outside, they'll also be able to unlock the door. Not to good for security now, is it? If you can get into the door of a Maxima or a Matrix, I know those 2 cars have this feature, since I've owned the Matrix, and was stuck with the Maxima for 2 weeks as a rental. You should be able to rig something up that's similar.

Hmm for some reason the opening the door from the outside problem never occured to me..oops
Microswitches.. doesn't that sound funky (or scary expensive )..
I guess I'll have to come up with a way to explain my question on the phone and call around to a few car shops and ask if anyone is willing to do this..somehow...
Thanks for the suggestions..

i remember this topic coming up before, i suggested an elbow swivel (boomarang shaped) with one side connected, via new rods to the door pull handle rod and the other conected to the doorlock button rod. This is just my theory, i have never seen the inside of any other than a G1, but seeing many other cars, this can work with creativity. If you also hook up the alarm to the doorlock rod (can use a G1 LX doorlock switch) it can trigger the alarm as soon as the doorlock button goes up, whether the door is even opened or not. You can also go as far as having it trigger the other doorlock motors and work as a team, or as a priority unlock....it's endless with time and money

Im no expert, but I think Pollax is right. I used to have a 94' mustang and it had power locks and the unlock feature thing. But one thing i noticed is that when you lock the door witht eh power lock button, it is power. duh. but when you unlock the door with the handle felt as though it was manual like you were pushing it up from undernieth. no motor.
I dont know what this means or how it is done, I just thought it might be relevant to the conversation.
If anyone dose figure it out however, I would like to know how to do it. I liked that feature and I find it annoying as hell having to hit the unlock button everytime i want to get out of the car.
