so, how do I go about upgrading my power and ground wires? do I just disconnect those, connect the thicker wire to the HU's harness and run it to the battery? where am I supposed to ground the HU?

Do you guys agree? Will the 9813 just not fit? If so, I'll sell it and get a 9811...

Thanks!

Nate
ooohh, I see now... well, it was late when I first read this, so I must have been half asleep or something and I always thought that he has the 9811

Why would you upgrade a ground wire on a head unit? Just curious. I could see using the same ground as the power wire when wired to the battery in Alpine's new unit, but otherwise a head unit shouldn't draw much current I would think. Just curious that is all. By the way Blue, because of that tropical depression, looks like my grills and painted calipers isn't going to happen this weekend Damn rain! GRRR!

Hey Guys!!
OK- If the good folks of Alpine recommend beefing up the wiring, then it is a most excellent idea. Some of the newer headunits with "high output" internal amps need more than a pencil wide wire. Blue has it right on the numbers, it can run on the stock wire, but it will heat up. I have seen power draw on an amp melt the jacket off the wire entirely. I don't see that happening in the Alpine, but I would not get into potentially voiding warrenty by burning up any stock wires!
The ground should also get a upgrade- easy rule of thumb is "close" to the same size as the positive. Ground as close as you can to the chassis, but watch out there is lots of induced whine to be had on the front fire wall! Ground should be as short as managable.
Crutchfeild has some really poor data in thier system on several cars, including the Protege. On the other hand no one else has as comprehensive a list of on propriatary information on some many different cars and hardware. They should probably best be viewed as a good starting resouce, but not the bible if it is close.

I didn't have to because the wire that comes from the alpine's wiring harness was long enough, I just attached a ring terminal to it and used a bolt that goes through the floor as grounding point.
