Alarm/Starter Recomendations

Ok now thats I've got my new MP5 and before I do anything else to the car I would like at least an alarm system although remote start would be nice as well. So I come here for your recomendations as I don't know crap about alarm systems.

My problem though is I'm being extremly picky as I want something that will tell me WHY my alarm is going off and allow me to hear it from the keychain and turn it off. Only system I've found that does this is the Compustar systems. Cruised around town here in Richmond,VA and noone sells them nor have they installed one.

What other systems are out there that are simular to what I mentioned above option wise?

Aladdin 2000 (cheap), JTI (better), DEI (available on fall 2002), Compustar (best), and some other cheap one I cant remember the company. All have a LCD, but only Compustar has the 1.25 mile range (on a good day )

i can't see them being any different to install if you were to bring one to a local shop. But i would reccomend the DEI model for superior reliablity, value and most of all dependability. Plus the addition of the Valet *carcom2* and it's internet trackability is awesome.

Range is good, but very location dependant. Downtown will drastically reduce range, as will hills and valleys. More open or less "conjested" air space will net you the best range. Antenna receiver placement is also important during installation. Another thing is if you have metallaized window tint, this will reduce range as well.

I couldn't say what's a good one to get and what's not. One thing to keep in mind, though...if your car is a manual and you've installed a remote starter, you'll have to get into the habit of parking in neutral ALWAYS. Otherwise, parking in gear and starting up your car by remote would put your car in automatic drive...not a good idea without someone at the wheel.

What do you think about the CRIMESTOPPER 2006? I've read a good things about it online and can get it for under $200 off ebay.

Also thanks for all the recomendations.

Between the Crimestopper 2006, the Ungo Ms2007, and the Aladdin 2000, which alarm is the best do you think. Also how much would an install cost. Thanks

Not horrible, but on the cheap side, i installed one about 4 months agoi and noticed the case, wire harness and sensors were exctly the same (just a different brand name) than other not-so-cheap-but-not-so-good brands. It does have a tiny little LCD remote though.

I still say, with something as important as protecting your investment, go with the BEST you can. Don't skimp.

I'd say out of those 3 you mentioned, Ungo has the edge. Install cost should be the same as any alarm...which is shop dependant. Expect between $250 and 350 for a mid level alarm. Remote start/alarm combos will be around $400-550.

BTW ppl, i have an Alarm FAQ on my site, it's still not fully finished, but it has quite a bit of info to get you started. Check it out...

Thanks for all the help.

You can get the ungo for 200 bucks. That means he is charging like 300 bucks to install the thing. That cant be right, how much does an alarm install go for. Thanks

Basic installation varies from system to system. Anywhere fro $200-$300 is average. He said they normaly charge roughly $180 is there base price then depending on what system, car, modules you want added it gets to be even more. Also said they think they will end up charging $250 for this particular system although they are not sure how hard it's going to be seeing how this will be there first.

The 2-way systems aren't that much different from normal systems but they are a little more in-depth install wise so expect to pay a little more to get one installed. I think for that particular system and having it installed for $500 isn't to shabby of a price. I've read other ppl having these 2-way systems installed was costing them $300+ installed.

I could save like $50-$75 if I bought the system online but this way buying it from them I also get a good warrenty/repairs as they are right down the road and warrenty everything they sell. So do I wanna save the $50 or just pay the difference and have peace of mind if it ***** up for some reason.

I have never installed an alarm myself before, how hard is it to do, I really don't feel like paying 250 to have it installed, although I dont want to do it myself and have it not work.

Not sure as I've never installed them. Reading online plus the manuals that comes with the Ungo system it doesn't "look" to difficult if you know what your doing under the hood. I probably could do it myself but like you I wouldn't wanna ******* something up and in the end have to pay for it anyways.

If you can't afford the, what I think is realativly cheap, install prices for these system go to your local BestBuy or Circuit City and buy one of there system that also includes installation. j/k

Alright, I have decided that I will install it myself. I would be willing to give someone 70-100 bucks to install but not 250. Its between the Ungo, the Crimestopper, and if the quality of the compustar is sooo much better I will just pay more money and get that. Any ideas? Thanks
