Go with the SS Compustar. Range is 1 mile.

I currently have the FM Compustar and 1/2 mile is not very far but suits my current condition. The SS may have better reception.

damn 1/2 mile.....1 mile range!!!!! That's friggin crazy. I think mine get about a 50-100ft range. What possible reason could you have for a range thats the length of over 17 football fields!!

The only thing i can think of is those really cool new lcd remotes that tell you whats goin on with the car.

I think i'd love to have 1 mile range though.

Yupe! these long range remotes are mostly for around the clock monitor of what's going on with the car it has icons of trigger zones and their status check.
The RS-850LCD has even a temperature sensor to monitor in car temperature and it will show on remote LCD.

What i like about the RS-850LCD on top of the normal features are these features:

1. Timer/Temperature controlled start.

You could set the starter timer to start and run the engine for the
preprogrammed running times and then shut down automatically.

Also the starter can be programmed to automatically start the engine whenever the temperature inside the vehicle reaches or drops below the preprogrammed temperature levels. This is very useful in winter or summer time.

2. Anti Car-Jaking.

If you are inside the car and the engine is either on or off and you are forced to get out of the car, the alarm will go off.

3. Inside and outside driver paging.

There is a sensor that you could mount on the windshield. When you tap around the sensor the system will page the LCD remote - a telephone icon will apear on the remote LCD with an audible sound. This is useful when you park the car where you are not supposed to and somebody needs to call you/let you know. There is a sticker that says "TAP HERE PAGING DRIVER".

4. Vibrate mode, clock and count-down timer capable LCD remote.

wow that's crazy. I can't beleive you can page the driver. I think that may actually be overkill there. but the rest of the features seem pretty cool. I guess the only drawback would be the price. how much does that thing cost? $600???

Clifford vs. Compustar

Okay guys here is the Low Down

First things first - The price
Its gonna be $700 (CAD) either way for a Compu or Matrix RSIII

Second
in Canada the Protege is not a $16000 car, It's over $20000 for a decently loaded one.

Third
If you have a manual transmission vehicle, you can not install the Clifford. It is only built for automatics!

Fourth the main differences between the Compu & the Clifford are the range & alarm

The Compu has much further range, because it is not FCC (Federal Communications Council- USA) or DOC (Department of Communications - CANADA) legal. If you live in Canada this may never affect you. In the US however they are slapping $2000-$10000 fines for using one. mainly because they are transmitting at an illegal frequency. I say it may never affect you in Canada but the day that radio controlled electronics Crashes a plane or stops a pacemaker you had better beleive the gov will crack down!

the Alarm on the Clifford is a better alarm, It falses less, has better standard features like NPC, Multilevel Arming, Highsecurity Disarm, etc (ask your salesman!)

So what happens when you forget to trun that function off, park the car in the garage, go to sleep and dont wake up in the morning cause your car ran every 2 hours because it was -15 on your garage and your garage & house fills with carbon monoxide?

And I have played with a starter that has a timer built on it, It is a pain in the ***, I got aggrivated after a month, of having to set it. Its fun for a short time, but will you use that function all year long,, I doubt it!

>> I do not use this auto/remote start unless my car is parked in an open parking lot. I use it when I park the car in the office (it is open parking lot). Morever it only runs for about 3-5 minutes and shutdowns.

>> This one is very easy to use and you can set multiple time sets for the car to start, don't have to reset it all the time. This is a different kind of alarm/starter system. It has got different kind of chirps unlike any other alarms i've ever heard, when i arm or unarm the car or when i use the car locator everybody sorta looking at my car. One time i use the car locator and a guy who was nearby said... wow nice alarm... I am sure I'll be using it a lot all year long.

I agree with you that this might be too overkill. It's probably too much for this car. But I like the features it's got.
I did not get the Compustar - some guys at www.the12volt.com
have reported problems with it - perhaps only poor installs.
