Adding an input to the modular sound system

I'd like to know if it's possible to add a 1/8" stereo input jack (or the red/white rca input jacks) into that space... What is behind the little panel that covers that area? Is it a proprietary connector, or is it something that would be relatively easy to connect an input jack to?

Mazda offers a minidisk player and cassete deck that can go in the little compartment in the bottom (between the 2 dials).

Here's a picture of the modular system i'm talking about (from the 2k2 protege and p5)

PS: My system is very slightly different from the one pictured above (more curved buttons, etc) but I'm assuming it's the same inside.

Fez, I will get you an image of the modular jack that you requested soon. I still have my original head-unit laying on my bench in a million-and-two pieces. I will snap a shot next time I have my digital camera at home.

Unfortunately, I have never found ANY pin-outs for the modular systems themselves - only for the vehicle wiring. If I find anything I will be supremely impressed!

Good luck with this project though ... sounds intriguing!

you would to use a fm modulator to connect any audio device to the stock system unless it was the factory MD or tape player.

That would be one way to make it work, but finding the pin-outs for the stock HU should *theoretically* allow you to splice any adio signal to the input. The FM mod would be working by tomorrow though ... a quick fix for the time-being.

Yeah I had thought about the modulator, but finding the pinouts and making an input would be cheaper and offer better sound quality, plus it would just be a neat mod.

Would the big service manual for the Protege have this information, or does that only have the wiring diagrams that are on mpvclub.com?

Do you think the dealer might have a manual for the MD/Tape installation that might include pinouts?
