6x9 infinitys and circuit city
My cousin had infinity references all the way around put in her car about 2-3 weeks ago by circuit city. These are awesome speakers I have them in my car only they are amped by a 100x4 amp. Anyway she has a simple alpine deck does like 18wx4 you/55wx4 RMS if she pops it up about halfway they crakle like mad and sound blown. Circuit city already replaced the speakers 3 times now and I tested them with my amp and sound great. Anyone ever heard this sound before from a head unit. One place said she needs a amp to make them sounds good that the speakers jsut need a amp. I said bull pucky your hu has issues.
So anyone know think its hu or think she does need amp?
Oh one more thing circuit city guy told me when i told him I had the same speakers and ran the rear 6x9's full LF for just pure bass he said I will blow them in 2 weeks. I replyed ok been runnign them for 3 months perfectly fine any truth to that statement ? I know its easier to blow with pure bass but as long as I keep the levels down dont see why they would blow.
Good Day,
Dustan

First Truth: The head unit is 'clipping' at full volume. It can only put out 5W RMS in a real environment. The tiny internal amp distorts *way* before the speakers. Add an amp to the system and at the same volume (loudness) it will be clean/distortion-free (like in your application). Buy the amp - the head unit is probably ok and if not - you won't be using the head unit's amp section anyway...
Second Truth: 'Just sending bass to the speakers will blow them'. That is just cr@p like you thought! As long as you don't hear the magnets banging against the frame ('popping') at high volume - you will be fine. Adding a bass blocker (to limit the lows to between say 120 HZ and up (to whatever you want) you will be able to push a little more volume.
Thus spaketh ME!

Speakers often get destroyed when there is not enough RMS wattage available to drive them. The result is that with the volume up, the amplifier "clips", which means the output wave becomes square as it hits its limit. It is always way better to have a lot of RMS watts, and turn the amp gain to about half to keep it from clipping. The stock deck probably just can't deliver enough juice to power the speakers. Trust me, I went through two JL Audio subs and a pair of Kickers a decade ago, but I know now that it was the puny amp all along. After getting the wattage right and cranking down the gain to about half, I never blew another sub.

ok since from what I ehar the hu is probably fine jsut not powerful enough to drive these speakers would the best solution be....
Replace speakers with lower end speakers that would sound good with hu
Add a 2ch amp and run fronts off hu
Add a 4 channel amp
obviosuly they are lsite din order of preferance as to cost altho not sure if she is even up for downgrading speakers but wondering if that would be best solution as 4ch amp would be over $300 and dun think 2ch is a option as I unhooked rears and still the front cracked and poped.
Anyway thanks guys,
Dustan
