Hi,

New member here, I'm actually looking for some info regarding aftermarket steering wheels for a 2001 Protege5 for a customer of mine. From what I can gather from reading the FAQ and some old posts, the 99+ Protege can use steering wheels from the RX-7 and the Miata. Is this correct? And if so, what years? Also, has anyone put a Momo or Sparco wheel in their Protege, and if so, you wouldn't happen to have the hub adaptor part number, would you?

If anyone can help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Question...does this customers car have cruise control? and if so...where are the controls mounted?

I have no idea. He never mentioned. It's a Canadian model, if that makes a difference.

well I don't know for sure where the cruise control is on that year for sure...on a 2002 its ON the steering wheel....so your choices are limited.

He would have to relocate the cruise control. Did they offer a 2001 protege5 in canada? I thought they were new as 2002 models in North America. Corksport has a lot of stuff not sure if it is exactly what you need though. Try this link: http://www.corksport.com/swheels.html

Thanks guys. I'll check Corksport. But, the question still stands, does it use the same hub as a Miata, or an RX-7? Or even an MX-3?

I remember reading somewhere that in some states its illegal to take a steering wheel out that has an airbag and install one with an airbag. Is this true in some or all states? I am happy with my steering wheel for now though....

Thanks guys. My customer is looking for a Momo/Sparco wheel. As for the legality around airbags, as I understand it, if you (as an individual) remove the airbag, then that is ok (it's your life you are risking), but if a shop does it, you have to sign a waiver, or else the shop is liable. I think this is how it is in most states and provinces. In some, you cannot remove them at all. Doesn't hurt to check.

So to confirm, the 99+ RX-7 and Miata would use the same Momo adaptor hub as the Protege5? If so, anyone have a part number?

Actually it could have been me who was asking about the wheel for a Protege5 specifically in regards to fitting a Tekniq Snap-off system as rpr posted on the Ontario Solo forum.

I have the 2002 Protege workshop manual if there is anything in there that would worth looking up... Tekniq is west-coast based right? So I wouldn't exactly be able to bring my car in for fitting.. hehe.

I dont' care about cruise control and am fine with getting rid of my air bag(s).. of course I'd rather replace the steering wheel altogether (remember in Canada we only get the plastic wheel, not leather) instead of driving around with unplugged airbags.. that kinda scares me

Those Mazdaspeed wheels are cool, but pricey when ordering into Canada

According to Corksport, the 99+ Miata hub will work, with some wiring modifications, either Momo, or Mazdaspeed non SRS. The SRS Mazdaspeed hub will work without modification, but it doesn't help me in this situation.

Just thought I'd share, maybe someone can use this tidbit of info.
