2001 Protege Stereo- Mounting Depth?
I am wanting to replace the headunit of my 2001 Protege LX, and would like to install a 6&3/4 inch depth Blaupunkt San Francisco unit in the place of the stock unit.
Now the rub is that Crutchfield ( a sometimes questionable souce in my bood) says max depth would be 6&1/4 inches.
What do you all think/ know/ suggest about this?
Any help would be great, and thanks in advance for the support and answers!
Dave

There is a 1 to 1.5" wide piece of metal mounted vertically behind the stereo. It supports the back of the climate controls and has a spot for a stereo support also. There should be enough depth for a 6.75" deep deck depending on cable locations on the back. If not, you could probably bend or cut the metal so the deck would fit.

njaremka - Thanks for the resurrection of the question! I am amazed the see this surface again, and thanks much for A) getting it back on the screen and B) responses to the question!
I have held off purchase of the units due to not knowing this depth. Maybe now I will get an answer.
I am still looking at the Blaupunkt headunit, and thier indash 5 disc changer, a nice combo that will fit the double DIN hole-
So thanks to one and all again!

eric f: thanks!
dave: no problem. i really like blau's head units for simplicity and power, plus the miami has red lights for night time to match the rest of the dash. the only problem is the mounting depth. so i thought i would do a search and see what had to be said here.

Hey Nik-
I am looking at the San Francisco, I have a Pioneer/Premier P1-R in my resident stereo play car- a 1990 Nissan Sentra. I like it's equalization features, and the Real Time systemand the microphone for setting up the system.
I am always interested in trying different components though- and the features of the Blaupunkt look good and similar in a different package, probably a little more user friendly, which is good as my wife uses the Protege on occasion.
I also really like the Blaupunkt add on CD changer that fits in the dash! Very cool look, fills the hole, and adds more features to the system.
I have already replaced all the stock speakers, they are nothing short of pathetic! I have installed Boston Acoustics seperates, and a JL audio 300/4 amp. I have a Infinity Basslink still in the box to go in when the head unit does.
So with this last peice of information, I can finish this system off and move on the to next!

Yea, any headunit should be able to fit. Yet again, they still havent made an aftermarket headunit install kit yet. I dont know why...but they should be out within the month. Thats waht circuit city told me yesterday.

I'm also curious about whether the 6 3/4" Blaupunkt head units and 5 in dash changer will fit in the P5. I'm anxious to buy them but want to make sure they will both fit. Please Eric or someone measure and let us know. Thanks!
