Winter tires and rims

I don't work for Perfmance Mazda but I saw these tires while I was waiting for my car. Performance Mazda is offering 14" steel rims with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1 winter tires, 185/65R14, balanced and ready to go for 700$. They look to be good tire and I might just get those. Anyone have any thoughts?

There seems to be some issue with 14 inch rims clearing the back brakes on our cars, so if you go for it maybe get a test fit on the rims before you plunk down your cash.

Everyone I know who has Nokians say they are the best thing going for winter tires, and the price doesn't seem too outrageous that you posted. I haven't tried them myself however. Check out Nokian's website - they have some test articles posted there that are quite informative.

here i go again biased one more time, I run Hakka 1's for the winter on my car plus Nokian NRV's for the summer. Best grip for the winter no trouble ever and the summer tires are sticky.

Hey medicnys were you in today (sept. 16) for a while waiting. Yellow P5 with the AEM sticker in the back quarter window. Next time come and sit and chat desk in the corner directly across from the service lounge.

Hakka 1 are the best that's what I got for my car and never regretted it.

Cost a little more put totally worth it !!!

Mine are 15 inches (P195-55-R15) with the steallies, they costed me 850 all in.

I bought my P5 from them and that's where I'm heading to get my winter gear.

$700.00 sounds about right for wheels and tires and balancing. You could probably find cheaper stuff at say Crappy Tire or Walfart, but again it's a judgement choice.

For 14" rims this should be the price
$50 for the steel rim and about $75 for the tire

that is about $500 + tax installed and balanced.

If you need a place I can recommend one that I go to all the time
in Scarborough.

(Nantucket ask for Lou)
Fair and honest. He has been there for the past 15 or 20 years
and a lot of people go to him for all kinds of rims and tires.

Hope this helps.

I just put Toyo Garit HT's on my car and am very impressed. They are way quieter than I thought they'ed be and are real good in the corners. Kind of expensive. $149.50 each, but what the heck both the car and I are worth it.

I seriously don't think anyone can go wrong by putting on a serious set of winter tires. Just get the all-seasons or summer tires off the road for the next 5-6 months. Unless you live, work, and don't travel out of the city, get a good set of 4 winter tires and enjoy the winter.

Michelin Alpins

I just had 4 14" steelies and 4 185/65/14 Michelin Arctic Alpins installed on my car today. Grand total....$630 everything included. Go to Costco if you have a freind or someone you know with a membership. They have a rebate on these tires. They are supposed to be excellent on ice which is my biggest concern during winter driving. I've only had a chance to test their dry grip so far. They are pretty good for a winter tire. I had the stock RE92's and the Michelin's dry grip is pretty close...didn't push them too hard but hard enough. I had recently ditched the Re92s for Toyo T1-Ss...amazing tire for anyone looking for new summer tires next year...but that's a whole other topic.

Anyways, 630 bucks...best deal I found on good winter tires. The Mazda dealership was asking 550 plus tax for 4 steelies with crappy Kelly Snowtrakkers and another place had that same combo for 610 tax in.

Whoa - so does that $630 include tax as well ?? I wonder if we have type of special here in Winnipeg ..... cuz that would be awesome !! Oh and did you need a coupon for the rebate ?

Yeah, that's $630...tax included, everything included, final price. Like I said, I shopped around a little and this was the best deal I found for decent tires. I live in Montreal but I'm sure the rebate is across Canada. I guess ask them about it. The guy told me about it when he gave me the price. The rebate is 50$ off on the purchase of 4 Michelin winter tires. I don't think it applies to other brands. Hope it helps.

garit hts

Hey patnew, were the Garit ht's you put on 16". I have run Toyo Observes 02 and swear by them but the Garit is the only one other than the snowproxes than come in a low enough profile for the rim. $150 isn't too outrageous, were did you get them?

The Garit HT's are 195|55|H|15s.

I got them at Treffs Auto on Carling here in Ottawa.
Great people to deal with.

The Mazda dealership is now offering 15" winter tires for your P5 if you are interested. I think it was $640 balanced and all that. You get 4 steelies with P195/55R/15 Kuhmo. Not a bad deal I think.
