Same aftermarket springs fit all. OEM all models use same front spring (dark green paint dot). ES has firmer rear springs (light purple paint dot). P5 has still firmer and slightly shorter rear springs (dark purple paint dot). ES and P5 also have slightly firmer strut valving than DX/LX. None of this means a hill of beans if you're changing struts or springs of course.

On nopi.com's e-catalog, they say the Tokico HP's fit every protege except the LX.. what the hell? Is it because of the drums? I really have no need to get the illuminas, but why wouldn't the HP's fit?

Thanks guys

Most "cattle-logs" are full of errors regarding different models. I often have to lie and say I have a P5 to get what I want for my '02 DX sedan. The HP's will fit them all, drums or disc.

True coilover options for a Protege:
Tein SS
JIC FLTA 1 or 2

These will increase performance and are completely adjustable, from the height to the camber to the toe-in. Anything else is just for looks.
