struts vs. shocks

Question struts vs. shocks
I am trying to find info on lowering my car. But, I keep on hearing about buying mp3 struts for the mp5 because they work better with the lowering springs. But, I have seen pics of installation and saw people changing shocks. Can someone help me? What is the difference between a shock and a strut?
