Hi all just got a quick question. for some strange reason, my rear brakes are almost shot. I have 15000 miles on the car and the rear brakes need to be changed already. My front break pads still have more then 3/4's of their pad left. Is this normal? I am pretty sure it is not. anyway thanks in advance for any help

 

Sounds like your e-brake might be mal-adjusted, and staying engaged or the calipers themselves are having problems...Unless you do a lot of braking in turns or other non-straight stops, the front pads tend to burn up first...

You are correct that for the most part it isn't normal...My P5 has 38,000 miles and the fronts just went, but the rear are fine with over half their life left...Take it to the dealership, if it is related to the e-brake or some other caliper disengagement problem it should be covered under warranty including the pad change...

Yes, painting the caliper can cause a problem. You have to be careful where you get the paint. The paint can hamper the proper movement of the caliper - reutrning to normal position after the brakes have been applied. I can cause the calipers to drag, thus speeding up your pad wear.

 

My 2002.5 Protege 5 is in the shop at this moment having the rear pads replaced. The car only has 24K miles!

I will try to place the blame on faulty ebrake from the factory and see if I can get it done under warranty.

Has anyone else had to replace rear brakes in such a short time, and before the fronts?

 

I had to replace my rear brakes at 24000 KM. They dealer said the calibers were rubbing and that's why it wore out. They replaced the caliper and the pads free of charge.
