Whoa. OK, well, that's exactly what I was looking for (and makes sense, too...)

Could you post the TSB number so I can have it when I talk to the servce guys? I looked at AllData and didn't see that particular TSB.

Thanks a lot.

Crap. Thanks, but it didn't help.

I scheduled a trip to Wellesley Mazda, took the car in, got a call, guy says the pads were borderline worn and wants to know should he replace 'em?

I say: "well, yeah - that's what the service bulletin says" (I don't mention that the pads aren't worn - my regular mechanic checked that when the problem first happened.)

He mumbles something about it not being a TSB, but instead being a "Mazda Tip" which apprently means "something Mazda North America sends out periodically because they're bored and have nothing better to do" and it's only coincidence that they look an awful lot like instructions to dealers on how to fix inherent problems with the car.

Then he mentions something about "...and there's red paint on the clip and maybe that's causing it to stick..." (ie. "it's your fault") at which point I come real close to flying off the handle - the calipers have been painted to 2 years now and aren't chipping (that G2 paint kit is pretty good...)

Fortunately about then my girlfriend yelled "No arguing!" and I remembered that I had promised never to waste time arguing with a %$#%ing service manager again.

Anyway, I told him forget it and am gonna go pick up the car. If I'm gonna pay someone to do the work it ain't gonna be him.

Pisses me off, too - this is just the sort of thing than made me sell my Neon and swear off Chyrsler products - even though I liked my Neon. I was hoping maybe Mazda was a little classier.

I'm gonna bitch to Mazda NA, but I don't expect it to help (I mean, hell, with the Neon Chrysler _told_ the dealer to do the work and he refused.)

So the moral is: When shopping for a new car don't waste your time comparing warranties - no one honors any of them anyway.

same thing here

i've been having the same problem. i have an '03 p5 with 16k miles and the right rear brake produces a high pitched squeal about half of the time i drive the car.
the dealership just called and told me that i need new pads and rotors and that it would run me $310!!! They said it's not covered by warranty.
most of us on here now a good deal about cars... does is make any sense that i would wear through rear brake pads and rotors in 16k miles? i don't think so. the dealership won't budge and will not repair this under warranty. i'm gonna try to take it to another dealership and see what they say. so much for my 4 year warranty. i'm really f--king pissed off. i guess i'll plan on replacing the pads myself.

you need to fight the warranty thing or go to another dealer...brakes are a bitch to get covered by warranty since they are considered maintenace parts, expecially pads and rotors. But 16K miles is way too low to need new pads or especially rotors...

finally fixed

I just picked up my car from the second dealer I brought it to. They replaced the pads with a new updated part, cleaned the calipers and machined my rotors. He said that mazda had acknowledged a problem with some of the rear brakes they had installed, and cover the repair under warranty.
Thank god. That saved me a couple hours and some moolah. So I guess it goes to show you that every dealer is different.... and that there is some kind of service bulletin out there that addresses this issue.
See this site for info on this...

Please let anyone else with this problem know about this issue with 3rd generation proteges.

That's great news.

Who are the 2 dealers involved?

While we all obviously want to know who's trying to weasel out of their responsibilities, it's every bit as important that the good ones get recognized, too.

dealers

I'm in Rochester, NY.
Crappy dealer that wouldn't fix it- Vincent Mazda
Good One- John Holtz Mazda.

The guy at the second one couldn't believe the first dealer wouldn't fix it under warranty.... especially when Mazda was paying for the repair!

Mine just started acting up this weekend. I changed the pads about 40k ago on all four corners. The rears are worn completely, but the front still have a little meat left.

I was just going to go the the parts store and pick up a set, but now I think I'll go to the dealership so that I can get replacement hardware.

I recently purchased a 2001 Protege ES and have also noticed this same problem - squeeling while driving whcih stops when the brake is pressed. I've only had it happen twice since I purchased the car (about 3 weeks) from a GM dealer.

Do I have any hope of a GM dealer (where i bought it) doing something about a Mazda TSB? (The car's under warranty for 3 months).

Also along the same lines - my brakes ocassionally squeel while pressing the brake... I know the dealer did two brakes to make the car certify and some people have suggested that it's simply new (non OEM) brakes "breaking themselves in". Does this sound likely or should i have them looked at? They seem very strong and haven't given me any problems stopping. If thats the issue how long should I expect to hear this noise?

Thanks.

But nooooooooooooooooo. Pisses me off. I still have a year and 1/2 left on my warranty for god sake! Sucks big time. Hopefully it won't be too much. I'll let ya know!

kreamy73, you should try taking the car to another dealer and/or fighting them harder on it. As you saw above, another member was denied at one dealership and got it done under warranty at another. I don't see how they can begin to argue the fact, but then again, these are dealers we're talking about!

Well I'll see what happens and try to get them to understand that this is not a "wear and tear" situation! I have a warranty for a reason....lol. Of course I am a girl so you know...........
They'll probably try to sucker me into some bull****. I do know a little bit about cars so we'll see....
