add ABS

Is it possible to add ABS to a 03 Protege5 if it didn't come that way? What besides the fuse will need to be added? Is it something coded into the ECU?

Without going into gruesome detail, you will need to replace almost the entire brake system except for the rotors, calipers and e-brake hardware, then add the ABS computer (and all associated wiring) and replace the wheel hubs and add the ABS sensors (and all associated wiring).

My advice? Forget about it unless (a) you have access to an entire intact parts car with ABS, and (b) you're willing to spend days performing the swap yourself. ABS computers are complicated and rarely fail on a newer vehicle, which means that they're very expensive to replace (usually $1,000+); this in itself will probably make the swap cost-prohibitive if you use new parts, regardless of the myriad other parts you will need to swap. On that note, don't even THINK about paying regular shop rates to have someone else do the work; the sheer complexity of the job means that you're probably looking at $800+ in labor charges.

My advice, part 2: If you really want ABS, trade in the car.
