i graduated sault in '99 with my comm. mifr with about 350 hrs on the dial. good school, great program, fun aircraft. unfortunately i am no longer current. i tried to go CF but got burnt on my eyes. after that i kinda lost interest.

i am sorry but i didn't really understand what you were saying about the blue vs. red s. are you at seneca. if you are could you rhyme off some instructs? i probably know most of them. chances are they were in my class at sault or i know them from seneca (did some joint training with them, air can stuff).

it's cool to see another flyer on here. good luck with your training.

Driving in the snow.

This is Funny.
People in 4x4 SUV's think they are the kings of the road, I see more in pill ups then cars.
Snow Driving.
Is not like dry road driving.
You as a driver need to adapt to driving conations.
The car will yes handle different in snow.
But snow tires ,come on guys, we living in the 70's
Maybe if you leave in a area that needs then, but if this is the case you should of bought a 4x4 not MP5 you know.
Not to start a flame war.

Small world,

went to seneca myself, got burnt the first year, passed but not enough to make the cut, should have gone to the sault but too far at that time...oh well live and learn.

Question, if I keep the stock alloys on, how trashed are they going to become after the winter, is there anything i can do to protect them or increase there life (ie. wax them to death)

Like I mentioned before, a good coat of wax on them will go a long way. At the moment I am also playing around with putting some sacrificial anodes (zinc or mag) on just for the hell of it. I will need to got to the school and get the wheels balanced after that.

I am sorry, but...... Are you guys that are saying that you only ever used allseason tires, ohhhh 16 years old?? Yes , you do have a point that allseason tires are fine if you really prepare yourself and drive safely. But............!!!!!!!!! How about that idiot in a SUV that goes out of control and your little allseason crap tires don't allow you to get out of his way.!!!!! Come on! We don't just die on the roads based on how slow we are driving, we have to get the best possible traction out of the car in order to drive safe and also most inportantly dodge 1) kids playing hockey on the streets, 2) Flying Hockey pucks!! 3) Animals: Deer, Bear, Moose 4) drunks 5) unconscious ect ...... Winter tires are about doing as much to as we can to make drving safer and protecting our beautiful cars!!! Some of you guys, sound like your still single.!!!! I have kids!!!! Thats my investment~!!!!! If winter tires protect me only by 12%, I am laughing!!!! If only 2%, still worth it to me!!!! Sorry, I had to say something!!!!!

You are on the mark "distance." Like I said, I never thought I needed them til I tried them, now I won't drive in winter without them.

Anyone who live's where there is a REAL winter should have a set of snows. Mine, with wheels, cost me just over $500 with shipping. A small price to pay for safety.

Exactly...most people's deductibles are like $500....if you get saved from an accident ONCE, then the tires have paid for themselves.

I don't understand the opposition to the winter tires?!!?

BTW, somebody asked about heated side mirrors....
No, they aren't.

say what?

nobody is opposing the idea of snow tires. the thread was initially started to inquire as to wether or not the stock equipment was satisfactory in the snow or not. the answer is yes. by all means if you have $500 dollars to spend get snow tires. sheesh!

i am quite a bit older than 16 albeit single. neither of these factors reduces the amount of responsability i have. rash generalizations about the people on here, people you don't know, will only cause problems. please keep the personnal attacks and condescension to a minimum.

i would also like to know were YOU live that has REAL snow. time to ante up tough guy.

Whom are you referring to?

I'll pony up since it sounds like you're talking to me...I currently live in Calgary, but was born and raised in Banff. My parents still live there and I go back fairly regularly in year-round. That meet your standards?

...people think you put snow tires on and you can drive normally. idiots. i'll keep my allseasons (sic) for ALL SEASONS and wave as the rest pull themselves out of the ditch.
That sounds like opposition to snow tires to me...maybe I mis-read it. Sorry if that's the case.

I don't think he is opposing snow tires as much as the mentality that often goes with it. They (snow tires) do an excellent job of improving traction in the winter BUT ice is still ice and it can be slid on. A lot of people get their blizzaks and their 4x4 suv's and think they can still drive at the speed limit+, those are the ones I think he was ripping on. If anyone actually tried to argue the actual traction properties of winter tires, I would have to slap them. They are Way better than all-seasons in the winter.

That said, I have chosen to not use them personally, but I have my own reasons. First, I drive quite conservative and mostly in the cities. Second, in Saskatoon (my home) it becomes very cold very quickly and we suffer less from freezing rain and freeze/thaw snow/ice. Once it gets cold, it stays cold, and dry. There were two days last year that I would have appreciated them. Thirdly (?), but quite importantly, I hate the look of steel rims. I did not pay thousands of dollars to have a car that looks ugly for 6 months of the year. This of course can be alleviated by just getting the guys at a tire shop to swap my tires off of the stock rims, which is what I am considering. I have a low deductible (100), so the cost portion of the equation does come into play. Now you know my reasons for not using winter tires as of yet. Though I might this year.

I am from Canada, and I'll say it again!!! Even if you drive conservatively (Spelling), how do you avoid the stupid SUV guy who just went out of control and is heading towards you at 110KPH???? Do you still drive conservatively (Spelling) or do you very comly pull away and stear out of harms way with your new winter tires!!!! I won't even get into those tires that you can buy which have spikes in them. I ahve seen many people in Quebec drive with these tires and compared to winter tires ......... but I will try not to get into it. I am from Canada. Our winters are pretty bad!!! And with the 2 lane highway #7, it is considered the worst road in Ontario right now, that needs 4 laning!!!! So really , I know what I am talking about. Like someone else said : $500 is a small price to pay, how much is your life worth to ya'll? Anyways, its summer here, just trying to help and possibly save a life.

1 other point about winter tires. They make driving in adverse winter conditions FUN! Sure I could get to work everyday in my Pro on the Dunlops but I sure wouldn't feel confident sliding around 90 degree turns and yanking that hand brake for tight 180's! Good winter tires can make you feel like Burns in Sweden... when there is no other cars around of course!
