What do you guys think...?

Last saturday while cruising on a Hi-way (401) a huge SUV in front of me hit my windshield with a rock. There was a huge snap i heard... Did not notice till i got home that my passenger side windshield had a 6 inch arch-shaped crack.

This really pissed me off.... as i was only doing below hi-way speed and it happened so many times before but did not cause any damage not until last saturday evening... Well I guess it was my bad evening.

I had called the dealer parts department and asked the pricing for OE shield - they qouted me $400.
Is it worth it to have an OE glass?

What about aftermarket glass from speedy, apple auto glass or from any better place?

Can I buy OE glass from the dealer and have speedy or apple auto glass replace the windshiled?

Anybody ever had their windshield replaced by those companies?

What are the pros and cons of the aftermarket one?

Any comments are very much appreciated.

Thanks.

for starters...don't get a windshield from the dealer.....its not worth it....besides.....there are better windshields out there.....go to a reputable auto glass dealer and get you a windshield made by PPG....

also...you REALLY need to check with your insurance company...MOST companies have special clauses that will cover a windshield and NOT have to apply the normal deductable....look into it......

btw, sorry to hear about that...one of my buddies got a
crack the same way a few weeks ago..and he was with statefarm
and got a free new OE glass. Even came out to work to install it
for him for free..well, $5 tip. hahaha.

i have statefarm, but depending on what state you live in glass replacement isnt free (was for me, finally FL is good for somethin). And it ended up costing 450 bux and one hour's time. Rock hit my widshield from an 18 wheeler (go see "complaint and greivances in the off topic forum).

I am from Oklahoma and State Farm will pay to have the chips fixed for free as long as they are smaller than a $1 bill. They do not on the other hand pay for the whole window to be replaced.

They can't fix my crack so I am going to have to pay for a new Windshield.

Safe-Lite Auto Glass - $280 installed w/ a warranty! PPG glass!

I've got a huge crack along the bottom of my windshield. Speedy Autoglass quoted me $274 to replace it or $308 if I wanted a tint band along the top. These are CDN prices.

www.toprotege.com - someone there cracked their windshield.. went to a place around VP and Lawrence (in Scarborough), and got a decent price... if my memory serves correctly, it was about $175, and I don't think she went through insurance... not sure though. May want to run a search there... this would have been about a month back or so.

Go to a reputable glass dealer and get it there. OE windshields are famous on our MP's for thin windshields. It cost me $100 but, I had windshield insurance. When you live/lived in Calgary, you need it.

MIA,

Sounds like you've got a chip... in that case, it will definately expand. You can get the chip fixed... they fill it in or something, and that prolongs the chance of it spreading.. but at some point, it may start to spread down the road.

As far as I know... you can get the chip fixed while it's a chip, but if it starts to expand.. thats it.. new windshield. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.. You may want to take it in to see about getting the chip fixed, while it's still a chip... see what they say.. or if they offer any sort of guarantee that it won't turn into a crack for however long...

Thanks for your replies guys..

My insurance company does not cover the whole costs. They apply the deductable amount. So i cover up to the deductible amount and they pick up the rest.

So i called a local auto glass shop and had them order and OE glass from my dealer. The guy at the shop checked the company who makes our glass (the one i have in the car right now... the broken one) ... in deed he confirmed that it is a Japanese company...

I do not know much about windshields... but I like Japanese products... as well i read one of the threads in this forum that says OE glass is less prone to streaks and rain marks..(?)

The costs is $400 for the OE glass and around $160-190 for installation all before taxes. Still waiting for the glass from the dealer.

Well, I guess our advice about a thin windshield didn't matter eh?
