Warranty on EGR...

Ok, heres the situation: I posted regarding a CEL I had. I took the car to AutoZone and it turns out that I had a P300 or P003, something like that code. Anyways apparently the code refers to an EGR problem. Also there was another code that related to a misfire. They said they wont reset it since the dealer would know that a programmer had been hooked up.

I just talked to the service rep and they said that because of the mileage (95000km), and the fact that it has only been in there once which was at 9,000km for an oil change, they would need to see ALL the service records.

My problem now is this. ALL of my service I do myself (oil change, plugs, whatever) or have a friend or my cousin do it (cousin has an oil change shop now). So I dont have any actual "records" but know the approximate mileages that I did everything at. I have an extended warranty, thats why its at the dealer for all this stuff.

Any suggestions? Or does anybody have a dealer in the Oakville/Burlington/Mississauga/Hamilton (Ontario) area they can recommend or work at?

Thanks
Gagan

my advice is very simple and you should seriously think about taking it.....

NEVER go to the dealer for anything but a new car.....EVER.

Take your car over to an independant garage, have them diagnose it and repair it for you. Also, never buy the extended warranties.

Well the reason I went with the extended warranty was because of experiences with our cherokee. By the time it got to 60,000miles there was over $10,000 in warranty work done (front driveshaft, rear driveshaft, rear diff twice, etc). If I do have the warranty though is it really much harm making the dealer earn the $?

with extended warranties YOU have to pay a deductible, so depending on what the problem is you may pay more in deductible than the repair is worth.

My wifes mustang is in the shop today for engine knock and it's under "extended warranty" I had to pay a $50 deductible for whatever they find. Now if the repair is going to be like $600 then I'm ok, but if it's a $4 spark plug then I'm out $46.

i would have your dealership examine and diagnose the problem for FREE and at that time let you decide what you'd like to do with it. It is a given that the delaership charges an average of 50% more than any other licensed garage. If it's something simple just take it elsewhere, if it's covered by your warranty then you can have them do it.

If they give you crap about your oil changes and no receipts you should ask them how your oil chages effect your EGR (exhaust gas re-circulation). Also ask them how oil change receipts are going to cause or cure a "misfire" problem in the engine...

AARRGGHH!! LET ME TALK TO THEM FOR YOU!!!

I hate the dealer....

Sounds good As for the deductible, I got the $0 deductible warranty. As for the EGR and stuff, definitely true so I'll make sure I'll ask that
Thanks again

funny story...my wife just called and told me that they said the EGR was bad on her car and the EGR isn't considered part of the "powertrain".....I had to ask it...."What part of the car is it then??" they told me it was cosidered a "wear item"....like brake pads and a clutch...or oil....I hate hving to fight with dealers but my wife bought this warranty before we were married so she's going to have learn this mistake on her own!!

I'd call BS on that. EGR is definitely part of the powertrain. Not only that, its one of the emissions systems which is usually covered for 50,000miles. I hate it when dealerships act like that, tell you wife I feel her pain!

I'm glad I've become more knowlegeable about cars and have access to forums like this. . . only time I go in is when I don't feel like doing the work.

That exactly is why I have my little warranty book that shows that the extended "bumper to bumper" covers everything including emissions which the EGR is listed under. I'm making sure tomorrow that everything the manual lists as "replace" or "inspect" is checked and by Friday it'll be in.

Did you see the Monster Garage Rock'em Sock'em Scions episode? I just watched Part 2 tonight, it was somewhat funny, I'm surpised they could get those things moving with all the steel they added. But I do have to say, those things sounded damn good bouncing off the rev limiter with no exhaust!

Gagan,

I recommend Burlington Mazda. I just got back from a tour overseas and during the winter my car had a problem with the egr valve. I left the car at my parents place so my father took it in. It was replaced under warranty, no question asked. Plus they replaced a blown marker light that had blown.

The dealership is awesome. Last year I took the car in to put synthetic oil in and they noticed the rust on my rotors and replaced them for me.
