Angry tire rubbing

can anybody help me? i already had the eibach pro kit and i recently added a set of 17" hp racing hurricanes with 215/40/17 kuhmo tires and i have noticed that when i go over some bumps that they rub inside the fenders any help or suggestions would be excellent

my 205's barely clear. Here is the math.

my stock dx has 195/55 15's... which gives an 11.7 in radius and a 23.4 diameter and a circumference of 73.7 inches.

my 205/40 17's... give an 11.7 radius and a 23.5 inch diameter with a circumference of 73.7 inches.

your 215/40 17's offer an 11.9 inch radius, 23.8 inch diameter, and a circumference of 74.7 inches. Plus, ultimately you are probably about an inch wider than the factory tire, cause I am about half an inch.

All this means you have more tire under the well PLUS you lowered it.

I have heard of spacers for rims, but I am not sure how reliable those would be.

So, if you decide to leave it as it is, you will have to live with the rubbing.

that's the reason i stuck with the 205s when i lowered my car...my 'tire' guy advised not to go wider, especially due to the fact that i drive my car on the track.

it sounds like your wheels are probably a +40 or +42 offset. how wide are they? are they 17x7? cause if they are and you're rubbing going over some bumps, i reckon you have a +40 offset on the wheels and your 215 tires are of no help. i run 205's with a 17x7 +42 offset and when i'm fully loaded and taking a fast turn, i rub on the rear left fender. gonna fix that really soon. it's all about the width of your rims and the offset they're sitting at.

To get rid of the rubbing on the fenders, you could "Roll ur fenders". Tools needed is a baseball bat and a jack. I've attached a few pics of it beening done on an Acura Integra from team-integra.net , but the same concept applies to a protege. I am in no way responsible for any damages.

Next, peel back the stripping that runs across the inside lip

Jack up the car from the rear jack point, and wedge the bat in so you have a little bit of up and down "play". Also note now that if you use a wooden bat like I did, it will get hacked up a bit
Using the tire itself as the pivot point, "roll" the bat along the inner lip, this will bend in the lip on the inside. TAKE YOUR TIME, there is no need to try to do this in one shot and possibly mess up your quarterpanel on the outside

Umm, no - Tonk said he was fixing that. I think he's looking to get wheels with a bigger offset or roll the fenders. The 42 offset probably would work with a sedan, but you really should go no less than 45 with the P5. 42 is just way too close.

+42 is too close. load up a car full of people and it'll rub the rear RIGHT fender. i'm retarded. fixing it means i'm gonna trim my fender a tad after i get an alignment. you won't rub "like mad" on a +42 offset 17x7 wheel, unless of course, you run 215's. my friend runs a 215 with a +45 offset and he rubs, too. this is all with 17x7 wheels. i've also come to realize that not all rubbers will rub. i talked to another guy who has a +42 offset and 205 width ventus tires and he's fine even with a ton of people in the back.

the sedans have a tiny bit more clearance, so you might clear with no problem running 17x7, +42 with 205/40/17 wheels and tires.

I have 18" by 7" with 215/35/18 and with the H@R springs and my tire dont rub. My wheels are +45 offset if im really driving hard with weight it comes close but nothing to worry about..

hmmm...now I'm worried....I was hoping to lower my car in the future, but after reading this post, I'm not so sure. I have +42, 17x7, with 205/40 tires. After reading this post, I think it'll rub

I've been in the hunt, and checked up alot, talked to a few ppl running even upto 225's without an issue, the problem is not the tires, it's the offset, recommended is +48, and I think that stock is something morelike +52 or more.

I would be worried with only +42 also. I'm pretty sure the stock offset is +45. If you are going to lower your car more than an inch I think you'll be a lot safer with +45 or more.
