Throttle Respone on P5

Have had it for sometime now but just recently I've noticed while giving it gas it takes a second or so for the engine to actuall kick in and get moving. This is my first new car so curious if this is by design (throttle manager for a smoother ride crap) or if something is going wrong here. I'm just now only noticing it b/c of course I haven't put her to the floor sort of speak till I got used to her and broke her in a little.

This kinda gets on my nerves from time to time in heavy traffic around here. I mean I give it gas so I can squeeze into the next lane only to find myself not move until it's to late then back on the bracks.

After an intake mod, the pedal will acquire super-sensitivity. I have to be careful to apply just the right amount or pressure or the car will accel abruptly.

thats what I was thinking also. I'll use someone elses advise for now until I get my intake and take off the plastic crap under the engine leading to the intake for now and see if that helps. Just been to lazy to get around to it.

sounds to me that your automatic tranny might be giving you a flase sense of what is throttle response. my can is a stick, and i find the throttle response to be quite good. and i have stock intake.

I really don't know whats going on but will try the intake first and go from there. It just slightly gets on my nerves from time to time when I punch it and it doesn't wanna get up and go for like maybe a second or 2 THEN it'll start moving. I loved my ol 88 shadow as that puppy would move and was a very good car but it's time has long come and passed.

When I push the gas in I expect the car to move as I'm pressing it in not a couple seconds AFTER I give it gas.

i have a manual and the throttle seems to hesitate on me sometimes too. thinking of getting the intake but trying to decide if it's worth it or not.

Even getting a drop-in K&N and performing the "swiss intake mod" will make a dramatic throttle responce difference- you don't need to go the full CAI route if you can't afford to.

Well, look at it this way... if you're planning on getting a CAI eventually anyway, then whats the harm in drilling holes in that which will soon be replaced? Another way to look at it, you're not gonna hurt anything (there's less risk than with a cai), but if you don't like it, I'm sure there are planty of people who have gone up to CAI's who'd be willing to seel you their old stock setup.

Don't cut any holes, you'll lose your warranty.

Try cleaning the battery terminals. They have to be shiny to work properly. I had problems and cleaning the terminals helped alot.

However, once you reset the cpu, by cutting power to it, it took 1 to 2 hours of driving till the acceleration picked back up to like new

I think its the auto tranny because i notice the same problems with the Injen CAI installed ill hit the gas and sometimes it takes a few secs before the throttle opens all the way. It happens occasionally but oh well thats what i get for getting an Auto.

It's definitely due in part to the auto - the other thing to remember is that these motors don't make a lot of torque down low in the revs.

So when romping the gas from a standing start with an auto tranny, the engine has to get revving a bit before the torque kicks in. With the manual tranny, you don't have to worry about this.

I have an auto also, and I feel the off-idle throttle response is about average. I've driven much worse, and also much better. It really depends a lot on the torque curve, and we just don't have it at low revs.

...

it appears it is a common problem with the protege.
it happened on my 2000 protege, one of the fuel management computer was faulty....and after complaining to the dealer (bunch of i$/"ts) and mazda canada, I received a letter saying that the warranty on that part would be extended to 7 years.
