Thinking about a Protege ES.

Well unfortunately I totaled a 2002 Focus ZX5. I loved that car but MAZDA seems to have better deals right now then the FOCUS.

Anyway I was test driving an 03 ES protege and it seems much faster then the ZX5. I dont know why, but then I keep hearing the focus is faster, ETC.

So with the 130HP ES engine, what can you do to make it a little faster. I want to just be able to beat HONDA's!!! I really like the cars feel, and I like the 4 wheel disc brakes as well. Can I get just over the 140HP mark?

What kind of upgrades can you do that are relatively cheap. What will an intake give you?

I ask cause I am new to mazda's and just want some more info in helping me decide my purchase.

I know that everyone always says this but if you want the best answer, look at the Protege FAQ link above and to the right. It answers SO MANY questions about performance mods. I definately recommend it!

I haven't had much experience with the Foci, but I felt the same thing with the Pro vs. the Focus. I think that gearing has a lot to do with it - the lower gearing of the Protege vs. the Focus means you are in the power band quicker and more easily in certain situations. you may like this or you may not. Just be aware that you will have high rpms on the highway with the Protege.

Happy hunting! I bought a P5 1.5 years ago, and my wife and I still really like the car.

honda's aren't really that slow, the Sir with 160 is pretty quick 7.xx seconds, the "real" TypeR is 6.2seconds 0-60.

you can get a civic that runs 12.x second ¼ mile for under 6 grand USD.. thats including the price of the car lol
