Stinky New car smell

Does anybody else have a really strong chemical-type smell inside their car. Kinda smells like a man made interpretation of skunk... or a bit that really stinky rubber cement.

It usually only smells bad when I first get into it in the morning, especially bad when in the heat.

It has smelled like this since new (March 02). Does anyone have any ideas of how to get rid of the smell. I've tried freshners (which only cover it up), and a odor eliminators. The odor elimanator didnt really work because it was made for organic based odors.

If anyone has any ideas please help!!!

Thanks,

Carlos

I believe the smell is caused by the plastics and other materials used in the car "outgassing" in hot weather when new. This SHOULD go away after a while. My car is now two months old and still has the new car smell, but I happen to like it and hot it stays around. Is your smell different than typical new car smell?

at first, i thought that the smell was coming from my air freshner, but after removing the freshner, the smell became much worse. i agree with you that it smells like skunk. i don't know what it is, but it is definitely bad, especially in the Tucson heat. let me know if you find a solution to this problem.

I had that smell for the longest time (my p5 is 6 months old now) and it's FINALLY gone away to the point that the skunky smell is virtually all gone...

i have a freshner in there now and it's all good!!

Yeah, it smells pretty bad, not like the "good" new car smell at all. It's more like a new car "odor" As a matter of fact, if the garage is warm, and I leave it parked overnight with the windows open you can smell it like 4 feet away from the car.

I'm glad to hear that at least for one of you it went away. My car is always in the garage, so maybe that has prolonged the smell. Maybe I should let it bake in the sun for a week, see if it speeds things up a bit.

3 months and I still smell it to. I tried to use mothers "PRESERVES PROTECTANT," but the new car smell won. How long is this "new car smell" supposed to last anyway?

What does everyone use to make their car smell sweet for the ladies?

That is so funny, because my boyfriend said the same thing (stinky marijuana) when he was in my car the other day. I thought he was crazy when he had said this to me. I still can't smell it! But when I saw this posted, I called him and said I'm sorry you are right my car does smell, I just can't smell it.

I don't mind the smell that much. And I don't think it smells like marijuana. If you want to smell marijuana try riding in my sisters car. Haha it smells horible because she has about 10 different sented things in there trying to cover it up. That and the smell of alcohol and puke don't mix well. lol

It keeps it smelling good and kinda gets rid of that new car smell....jsut dont let people smoke in your car. and it is all good. (my car smells like smoke and I have to get the cloth shampooed every now and then to get rid of it cuz it drives me insane!!!)
so don't smoke or let people smoke in the car!!

I would go nuts if someone smoked in my car.

here would be the sequence of events:

But of course you can not really do much when your mom drives except to ask her not to smoke in your car

Haha someone left something in your car from the factory! lol
Came back from lunch and left you a prize.

No seriously I dont seem to smell anything other then new plastic, you may check to see that your not melting some plastic on the heater if you have used it also check your air inline for the ac as you could have picked up a dead something.
