Stinky cabin air filter

Stinky cabin air filter
I left the car's ventilation control on "recirculate" instead of "vent" by accident for a number of humid days and fungus has undoubtedly formed in the filter.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the musty old rag like smell coming from the cabin air filter without actually replacing it? I'm going to try spraying Lysol on the vents tonight.
If I have to replace it, is there an alternative apart from getting a genuine Mazda part?
Anyone tried getting to the cabin air filter. Is it hard?

I know on the P5 that the filter can be removed from behind the glove compartment. You will have to pull the glove compartment down and remove it. Not sure if there is another filter available other than Mazda's.
