If you plan to do serious enough work that you will need a shop manual, the dealer price is worth it.

I got my mazda shop manual through a mechanic friend who gets a discount from Mazda. Its about 4˝ inches thick and packed full of good info. I paid 101 dollars canadian for mine, which is like 50 cents US. If you want one I can probably get him to order another although I would think that shipping would be alot but im not sure.

I might be interested in that. I'll have to call up the local dealers and see if they sell it for cheaper. Didn't realize it was such a big manual... sounds like it would be pretty detailed at 4.5" thick. 100 canadian is like 70 US isnt it?

You should definitely check all your local dealers. For some reason, many dealers don't want to sell you a factory service manual (FSM) and will mark the price up way beyond reason. I've bought several Mazda manuals, and I've been quoted prices anywhere from $80 to $175 USD - guess where I bought it. They're ~$55 USD with the Mazdaspeed team support racer discount.

Also, make sure you know what you're buying. There are actually FOUR manuals, one for general maintenance and repair, one for engine rebuilding, one for tranny rebuilding, and a detailed wiring diagram. For most jobs, all you need is the general repair manual; it covers routine jobs such as changing timing belts, changing clutches, simple electrical repair, etc. You have to be doing something pretty hardcore to need the other three. Make sure you're not being quoted a price for the entire package, unless you really want the other ones.

Of course I want all four I'll call out there today and see what the prices are.

edit:

Called em up just now... 120 or so plush shipping. He acted like he wasn't sure exactly what it would cost, which seems a little suspicious. I'm a cheap bastard so that's just a bit too much for me.
