Lightbulb Roof Rack Whistle Resolution

Hello Fellow P5 owners! I picked up my blue p5 new years eve and was automatically drawn to all that whistling noise up on the roof.

Well I don't know about everyone elses P5 but the front bar of the roof rack has a squared off leading edge but the opposite side is smooth like an airplane wing. So I swapped sides and wha-la! Much quieter (75mph vs. 55 before).

Cool didn't notice whistling

My car came with the moonroof deflector. I never heard whistling. I recommend installing it (if you have a moonroof of course)

just a personal opinion...

Would the P5 not look better with the roof rack gone and maybe a nice wing at the back?

Hmm what to you mean? You flipped the front one around and mounted it backward?

I heard the whistling but was just going to take the whole thing off...

I turned mine around to put the round edge front and was "rewarded" with the wail of an angry howler monkey on my roof at highway speeds.

I just took mine off completely.

Same here.

It makes an obnoxious noise as it is, but turning them around lasted only a few minutes for me - You couldn't stand to stay in the car with all that screeching.

I have the moonroof..with NO wind deflector....I have left my rack on.....I don't have a wind noise problem at all....I have found a much easier solution...

CRANK UP THE VOLUME!!! heck...I can hardly hear my bosal Cat back either! If I am crusin in the ride...the volume is usually at least up to the 50% mark on my stock system.....and I don't hear anthing but my tunes and some of the beatuiful exhaust note.

as far as taking off the rack and putting a wing on in the back up top? OMG I saw someone that actually did that at the WIC meet in Houston....it was SERIOUSLY fugly....and looked riced up to the max....for the stock one was still on it too....where was that guys head at....well I can tell you....and he obviously was a contorsionist to get it there.

Taking it off and reinstalling the roof rack takes about 5-10 minutes. We just took ours off - much much quieter at speeds and aerodynamics should be better so better mpg.

I have the moon roof deflector & it still makes the whistling sound. If you crack the sunroof up with the inside cover back there's all kinds of noise.

Most aftermarket racks have an option of a solid plate that mounts before the first rail across the car..but i think those look rather ugly.

I took my roof rack completely off. If you want to keep your roof rack on for practical purposes (bikes, snow gear, etc.) get a fairing to reduce the wind noise. Both Yakima and Thule offer fairings that probably fit the Mazda rack system.

Good Luck.

Yeah but the problem is with the American models is that once you take the rack off you are left with some rather unsightly remanents of your roof rack mounts. You then need to get the seals that fit into the roof. I know this cause I take my rack off everytime I wax my car (to avoid gettin wax on that black plsatic, it looks nasty when you do that).

The dealer should have provided you with the pieces that fit in place of the rack.

You should have four flat pieces that install into the rail where the towers/base of the rack were located.

My dealer provided the pieces when I purchased the vehicle (San Diego, USA)
