Hello everyone, This is my first post on this forum. I have a question and I'm sure you people will have the answer.

I currently own a 00' Protege DX. and I'm looking for something to replace my little 1.6 litre. I am thinking about the turbo'd motor from the Mazdaspeed Protege. Does anyone know if anyone else has successfully placed this into a 99-00 Protege DX and how much of a pain in the *** it is. Any help would be appreciated...THANKS!

 

NEGATiZE swapped out a 1.6 auto for the 2.0 FS-DE and manual transmission in a 99 dx. I'm sure it involves wiring harness swap, but it's essentially plug and play once you have all the stuff.

 

oh God...don't do it. I'd MUCH rather have the 1.6L or 1.8L motor in a protege especially if you want a turbo. They are much boost-friendly.

HiBoost makes a 1.6L turbo kit for the protege and I think he made like 380whp on the stock engine.

To put it into perspective for you a stock Evo8/9 makes about 240whp..... save your money. Call Ken @ protegegarage.com and ask him for some hiboost. Tell them protegeclub.com sent ya.

 

Wow...That kit isn't cheap but then again I don't guess the swap would be either. That kit will go directly on the stock engine? And are you sure that thing pushes out 380 horses because that's amazing!

 

Roddimus is right. Keep your 1.6 and buy the HiBoost. You'll spend at least as much on a swap, for a weaker engine.

If I had to swap, I'd replace my 2.0 for a 1.6! And then boost the living hell out of it.

 

yes, maybe, but 2 liters will always be 2 liters, no matter you say..

I'd rather put FS-ZE but it's almost impossible (read: too expensive) to import that car (not the engine) in my country, but the front cut could be the solution..

if you want turbo no matter what, I recommend you FS-DET..

even if 1.6 is more boost friendly, 2.0 has more potential..

you can even put sth out of K series..

 

WTF did you read what you wrote. HOw can something be more boost friendly and at the same time have less potential. FS = Boom Boom while ZM = Zoom Zoom.

The Zm not only has more boost potetnial but way more modding potenial with its possible VVT upgrade. + you can use all the old B6 or BP parts to hod rod it. Which makes it cheaper and with alot more possibilities.

That 1.6 is bullet proof, thing can handle boost like a monkey handles a bananna. I find myself wishing i still had my '00 Lx with the 1.6 to play with.

There isn't a whole lot of aftermarket support for the 1.6, but Hiboost turbo kits are preemo

 

If I decided to go with the HiBoost turbo kit...What aftermarket parts would I need to make it possible...I'm sure low-compression pistons and what not. But will the turbo bolt onto the factory engine and run without completely frying the motor?

stupid question probaly.. but I only see hiboost kits for the 1.6 and 2.0L engine @ protegegarrage.com, does that mean they don't have one for a 1.8 or that the 1.6 can be fitted on a 1.8 as well?
